Upon finding out that the council doesn’t make money from car parking permits at an online public consultation, one wag piped up: “Well you’re more incompetent than I thought”.

Council can’t win. Charge enough to make money would price people out of having a permit

See also any property the council lets out to the public

Also the 12 inch single Blue Monday by New Order, cost more to produce than cover price sold in shed loads lost a penny for every copy, sold a million

The rest of the cost is covered by pay-and-display parking charges. The law requires any "profit" from Council parking charges to be invested in transport improvements. Although, I'd happily see the law changed to allow Cllr MacInnes to keep it. Just so I could see the reaction of the pro-driving mob.

What like if they drive off and come back at night when anyone can park in their spot!

All of this would lead someone like me to say the city has too many cars and they are certainly too long and too wide

If everyone had smaller cars like a vintage mini or cinquecento then everyone could park happily.

When these parking bays were established cars were much shorter and narrower.

    Glenlee Gdns is 100m long.

Standard parking space is about 5m. So that’s a maximum of 20 cars on each side of the road.

There are at least 40 homes on Glenlee Gdns.

    Do the maths.

    Do the maths.

The pavements are 2m wide, so you could fit another 20 cars on each side if you assume people don't need or want to walk on the pavements.

@stickman love it, you want two cars then go for two small cars

@frenchy, also loving your work. Council could generate revenue by selling off pavements for parking

Bigger Spaces for Motors they could call it. Ford and Shell could provide grants?

    Performance pricing for parking, now!

You set the price so that the parking bays are only ever 80% full. Then people that really want a space, will always get a space.

Oh, and start reducing the number of spaces available. Charge a premium for bigger cars. Another premium for worse polluters

    From link -

Where curb parking is underpriced and overcrowded, a surprising share of traffic can be cruising in search of a place to park. Sixteen studies conducted between 1927 and 2001 found that, on average, 30 percent of the cars in congested traffic were cruising for parking.

Love the San Francisco smart meters where they adjust the cost each month to hit the right price point. In Edinburgh we would need to consult every month to agree the price though?

@neddie - good idea on making permits related to vehicle size and carbon footprint. We are in controlled zone at shop with only limited pay and display but found a hidden group round at Dorset Place that are always free. Short walk.

...on average, 30 percent of the cars in congested traffic were cruising for parking

Which is why 20mph zones help as people can see and stop in time I think.
