    G'day all

New here and hoping to tap into collective wisdom on cycling in the capital.

Can I ask about the southbound cycle lane in Gilmerton (near the Morrison's store junction). It appears to be joined at this point by a northbound cycle lane?

Can anyone who has cycled this route point out the logic of this and how I might use it on a run in to town from the south?

    Thanks

It's to connect to the circuitous quiet route turning on the left of the photo there. Means you can cycle across the road at the traffic lights rather than at that island.

I hate that quiet route, so indirect.

Also the cycle lane looks so unnecessarily narrow where the white car is, but I guess the road may narrow further up. Haven't cycled that way in ages.

That's really part of a northeast-southwest route (highlighted in blue here), rather than for those cycling on Gilmerton Road itself.

Yeah, I got lost on that "route", where you have to double-back on yourself at the end of a cul-de-sac, and someone had naughtily swivelled the sign around

That new Gilmerton SfP route rode pretty well for me. Some of the surfaces, especially at the northern end, are suboptimally rough and badly need swept, but a far nicer experience than the previous choice between door zone or passive aggressive close passes as drivers desperate to get to Aldi slide past your elbow.
