50% rise in cycling... referred to as a "hobby" and a "sport", with the implication it's only really enjoyable in the sunshine.

Frustrating representation of what should be a positive story.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000v1zh/reporting-scotland-evening-news-06042021 21:48 if you want to see it.

Featuring handlebar footage presumably from the reporter, seemingly trying to ride as closed to some parked cars as possible.

Ending with: "While more infrastructure might help more people get out on their bikes, there's one other thing that will also do just that - better weather"

"What would encourage you to stay in the saddle?"
Stephen Jardine's phone in yesterday (Tuesday 6th) on Radio Scotland had a good mix. Stephen's manner is much more positive towards cycling - just listening now on BBC Sounds.

Link to come if I can find one.
    Mornings with Stephen Jardine 9am - 10am

"Do we need more bike lanes? Is there too much competition for space?"

That's definitely true @LaidBack - much more balanced representation I feel. It's great reporting Scotland covered this - I was just frustrated it was presented as a leisure activity when with a change of narrative the benefits of transport cycling - shopping, commuting etc... could have been extolled

For the "common man", read "the neighbourhood/pub/office/golfclub* blowhard".

*delete as appropriate for one's social milieu
