Today’s rubbish getting shouted at by a geezer in a van

Well was yesterday on the hunter’s tryst mayhem road where the drivers swing into tescos from the left hand land without indicating and indeed swing into your living room without even knocking on your door.

Anyway bit further east heading towards fairmilehead and riding two abreast in the very wide cycle lane at 8am with no traffic.

A sort of brown bin emptying type small truck with the cage on the back overtakes us and passenger shouts Get In The Cycle Lane.

I replied We are in the cycle lane you big dick.

He shouts something else and and I shout I have your number at which point they take off.

We caught them at the lights but they were going t left and we were going right so left it at that.

Sorry if you were disturbed by this fracas.

It is quite an eventful street though often looks innocuous.

Morrisons, not Tesco. It still has fresh fish and meat counters, unlike the Tesco down the hill.

Sorry about your poor experience. I've been reasonably impressed by the majority of drivist behaviour I've seen around cyclists along Oxgangs Road recently - pulling well over on to the hash marks when passing folks in the bike lane, not seen any left hooks for a while. That said, I think speeds are starting to creep up again.

What I found annoying in that area yesterday was the noise from passing traffic while I was trying to enjoy listening to a goldfinch singing from the trees at the entrance to the park opposite Morrisons. That's on a 20mph road and most people seemed to be observing the limit, more or less. As most of the cars were more or less idling it wasn't engine noise that was spoiling my appreciation of the birdysong* but the tyre noise on the road :(

    * Apart from the occasional disturbance from one or another of Lothian Buses' finest.

This post doesn't strictly fall into the "Today’s rubbish getting shouted at by a geezer in a van" category as the vehicle in question was not exactly a van but some sort of body-modified range rover type of thing. You know the type.

Warning: this post may get rant-y.

My son and I were walking hand in hand along a busy and narrow pavement to get to school this morning. Why the pavement is so narrow outside a school I don't know (I do know. Can't take space from cars and give it to people that would just be INSANE). So the time was ~8.50 (think: lots of school kids around), we were walking near a school (think: lots of school kids around) and its a weekday morning (all signs are pointing to there being lots of school kids around).

Anyway, my son was skipping along and trying to walk on the kerb and I know that he has two left feet so I was holding his hand to make sure he didn't fall into the road. Sure enough at one point he tripped over but because I was holding his hand he didn't quite hit the ground but sort of dangled in front of me as I held him up. Crisis averted, or so I thought.

Next thing I know over my shoulder a horn blasts and a window is wound down. "You need to control your kid he fell onto the road". So I turn round and see this monstrosity of a van/spaceship/vehicle which has stopped and the guy inside is leaning over to make sure that I can hear him. My immediate thoughts are that 1) he didn't fall onto the road; 2) don't tell me to control my kid; 3) that is a ridiculous car.

I was annoyed that this guy felt the need to stop and remind me that roads are for cars so get out of my way. So I
couldn't help but respond semi-sarcastically and thanked the guy for not running over a child. The drivist felt the need to point out that he had been driving slowly and so he had been able to brake quickly, so I felt the need to point out that he was doing exactly as he should be doing: driving slowly around children outside of a school on a school morning where the kids are walking along a narrow pavement. Well done to you sir.

Things descended rapidly from there. It's almost as if some drivists feel like when they drive slowly and carefully that they are doing A Good Thing. Like they want a medal or something. He correctly pointed out that I had a terrible attitude. I pointed out that he had a big daft motor. Threats of violence etc came my way. Then we parted ways and presumably he was able to get over the inconvenience of having to drive to the conditions and brake to avoid killing a child that didn't even fall onto the road in the first place.

    Rant over.

    Thanks for posting.

    Hope you feel better.

All part of your son’s education (unfortunately).

Unfortunately driver not taken the time to look at latest PS/CS ‘advice’.

Always feels better to get the frustration out!

All part of your son’s education (unfortunately).

He did feel very guilty and was upset but I reassured him that it was not his fault.

Sorry this happened to you @Coco - that's really awful and so frustrating at the despicable entitlement of drivers.

Driving slowly and carefully around children is not "doing a good thing", it's the bare minimum, cost-of-entry

Doing "a good thing" is not bringing heavy, dangerous machinery anywhere near children and indeed not anywhere in a city
