Just read the latest newsletter from the West Edinburgh LimDems and have just pinged Robert Aldridge the following e-mail in respect of the Drum Brae North cycle lane. If you stay in the area please feel free to rubbish his remarks too :)

    Hi Robert

I’ve just read the latest Lib Dems newsletter and have a couple of questions/points for you to consider in relation to the cycle lanes on Drum Brae North.

Given that this is a wide one lane road and there is no room for two lanes of cars until you are close to the bottom of it, surely it is better to use the space to provide a safe spot for cycling and encourage people on to bikes.

Also some of your statements make no sense when used in the argument against this bike lane. For example, given there are only two streets (one in each direction) that don’t lead to a dead end I am interested as to how you can claim the cycle lane has made the side streets more congested, especially when it would take longer to rat run.

Please also provide evidence of how this segregated lane makes it more dangerous for cyclists and more hazardous for vehicles. In my opinion the standard of driving has dropped significantly since this pandemic and perhaps it is that which needs tackled, not something that protects vulnerable road users.

There seems to be a lot of people that are against any safety structure for cycling even when there is no impact on road space for drivers due to the belief that cyclists do not pay for usage of the road and are freeloaders. In my opinion your party are guilty of listening to this noisy anti cycling group instead of doing what is right in encouraging green travel.

I would also like to point out that I have been driving this road since 1987 and strangely enough it was often very congested despite there not being any bike lane back then.

You used to promote cycling, what’s happened?

LibDems - a party that once chased green and pro Euro votes but gave up. Now the recipient of tactical votes. Councillors scared to be bold.
With main party (all 4 of them) Willie Rennie is resigning as Scot LibDem leader
He never did any recent photo-ops on a bike that I can remember.
Alex Cole Hamilton may be new leader. He has a 1 in 3 chance.

He left his Strava on while driving home from Pedal On Parliament at well over the speed limit.

Yup, that just about sums up the post-coalition, post-indyref Lib Dems, lol.
