Nah. Might catch a bit before going to bed though.
Quite enjoying the opening ceremony on Beebly Red Button.

Pretty sure I just saw Sandy Gilchrist on the telly, swapping a bike out for Eddie Dunbar.

This reminded me of a certain cycling commentator

Remembered to turn the TV on with 10km to go. Exciting stuff.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Saw it from about 5.40 - enthralling stuff. As an aside, think there are more potholes in my street than the whole of that 234km course.

Day 1 of the Olympics is on the iPlayer now. So possible to catch the road racing at a more civilised hour after all. Also highlights on Eurosport at 5pm.

Morning!

Morning, great men's race yesterday, with a mega podium, smartest rider beat the strongest and then the best climber. Daniel Freibe had it write when he said WvA and Pog were whack a mole champions. shutting down so many attacks and still dominating the sprint for 2nd.
Women's race interesting - Dutch just conserving energy. Who will stretch them and how?

Carapaz is a wiley rider, and strong. The rest of my crew had been obsessing watching the Moviestar documentary (or is it a soap opera?). So Carapaz‘ win was particularly intriguing.

44km to go I think the leaders will stay away.
Van Vleuten is brilliant, but can she catch them? 1 vs 3
Peleton messing about

What an amazing ride. Guts to go from the gun and to drop the breakaway companions.
No race radios made for far more interesting racing, maybe peleton thought they were racing for gold. Surely team members (especially Dutch) should have been put at points on the course with chalkboards showing time gaps...

Apparently AVV thought she had won. They didn’t know that the Austrian rider was still out ahead of the break.

Seems whole silver medal group thought they were racing for gold. Shows that you shouldn't rely on the race organiaers for race situation. Suggest a lot of team management people should take a long hard look at themselves.
Takes nothing away from Anna Kiesenhofer, a superb ride.

You have to feel for AVV, especially given what happened in Rio. Hopefully she wins the time trial.

Managed to watch the entire men's race yesterday on iPlayer, in sections fitted around the other stuff that day. Watching it in "real time" certainly gave a sense of just how gruelling it was, which made the late breakaway even more impressive. Great ride from Carapaz, more bad luck for Evans. Also nice to see the Abbeyhill connection in the shape of Sandy Gilchrist briefly coming into view in the early stages of the race. It's a small world!
Will try to catch up with the women's race later. Until then, I have my own bike ride to do...

Mountain biking wild!
Posted 3 years ago # -
Tom Pidcock on last lap with a good lead on the field.

Women's race was really interesting. Nobody expected Anna Kiesenhofer to keep the peloton at bay, indeed the other riders seemed to have not realised she was still in the lead. Amazing achievement nonetheless. No radios certainly makes for an unpredictable race.
Now to catch up with the mountain biking if it's available somewhere.....there's triathlon to look forward to as well. Difficult to keep up with it all!

It's a crazy mountain biking course - so technical. Can't believe how fast the riders are going round it. Very exciting race. Van der Poel - Ouch!

Well done Tom Pidcock - incredible ride!

He does look very happy in the photos

How he actually got a place at the Olympics is whacky:

(I guess UK would have had a guaranteed place if he had actually been competing in cross-country during the season, instead of road?)

"I'm happy this shit's (the Olympic Games) only every four years because it's fucking stressful."

Who is Tom Pidcock?
Pidcock was left devastated at the end of May when he broke his collarbone after being hit by a car driver while training in Andorra.

As there are now Olympic categories for such sports as artistic swimming, BMX and skateboarding, isn’t it about time there was a recumbent bike category for both time trial and road race and perhaps a velomobile one as well
A lot of superfast bent riders and velonauts aroundPosted 3 years ago # -
I watched the mountain bike race - it's terrific - because it's an obstacle course as well as a race. What a rider that Pidcock bloke is.
Serranto who came third was hardly mentioned until he snuck up on the bronzers.
I do like how the spectators ring cow bells - much less obtrusive than those awful raucous Vuvuzelas.
And feel for the poor Czech bloke who got a puncture.

@jss, agreed. Quite looking forward to catching up with the skateboarding, women's final was today I think. Daughter has an interest in it as a hobby, so will watch together.
