I seem to have plunged into DIY after many years off.

Have some doors that were stripped and (I presume) varnished, before we bought our flat. They're looking a bit grotty now. I don't want to do a complete refinish, but thinking about sanding the worn/dirty looking areas.

what's the current recommended finish? wondering about oil rather than varnish?

Doors tend to taken a bit of a pounding - being regularly pushed and kicked open, so you generally need something hard wearing. I would be inclined to go for a varnish myself. Screwfix have a decent own-brand water based varnish, which dries relatively quickly, doesn't reek and is good value. Don't skimp on the sanding and cleaning beforehand though, as you have nowhere to hide with a clear varnish - any dirt or blemishes will be pretty obvious. (and yes, I really should follow my own advice)

@kaputnik has recommended oil soap followed by varnish applied with a sponge.

I quite like Langlow Patina. It's a polyurethane gel that you apply with a sponge or rag.

Doesn't come up super-shiny (more a modest satin sheen after 2 or 3 coats) but is very tough and doesn't chip or scratch like varnish. If you find the grain is rising a light sand with wirewool or abranet between coats will take care of that.
