Anyone know what surface the coastal cycle path between Broughty Ferry and Arbroath has? What tyres would cope well?

In case no one has personal experience, OSM shows it as being asphalt almost the whole way, with some sections tagged as "compacted" between East Haven and Arbroath.

Yes, that's right. I did it on 32mm tyres and panniers with no problem.

Thanks both. Do you reckon 23mm tyres would be okay?

Actually, I've reviewed my Strava and I took the path next to the A92 between Carnoustie and Arbroath. I was getting confused with the path just North of Montrose.
Both options are on the NCN. Not really sure why I took the A92 option to be honest!

There's some images on Mapillary from 2015 of what seems to be someone's ride all the way along the coast: https://www.mapillary.com/app/?pKey=252205043354796
There's only a couple of images on Geograph of the non-asphalt section: https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/5170723 and https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6160013

Wonder how many motoring forums have people asking "Can I drive a normal car along this stretch of motorway, or should I take the monster truck?"

@Morningsider, aye good old Blighty, where cyclists need to know their place. Which is in the gutter, or on the shared use "path".

We tried out the path today after the rain passed. Very nice but huge number of dog walkers near Broughty Ferry made progress tricky. Then North of East Haven the path was a compacted stone surface. Okay but not as nice as tarmac. Arbroath was nice, and East Haven is gorgeous. I would do the path on a tourer but not as part of an audax

Going from Cellardyke to Alyth last week we used A roads as tandem co-pilot has a dislike of narrow paths with rough surfaces.
Towards Tayport we used NCN1 which was tarred with barriers in Tentsmuir forest. This though broke down to 5 miles of compacted with gravel in places which was hard work.
We should have stayed on B Road and saved time and energy.
That said it is a destination for people wanting to ride bikes traffic free.
Our tyres are Big Apples so OK but I wouldn't be happy on 25mm.Posted 3 years ago # -
@Laidback It's a shame that the old Leuchars to Tayport railway isn't in tact for a cycle route. There's a relatively short section that has been engulfed by fields.
Using the Forestry Commission tracks to cut through Tentsmuir may have offered a smoother route than taking the NCN1 round the edge of the forest.

@mga, yeah if I'm ever passing that way I use the forestry tracks or the Tayport to Leuchars B road. Forest preferable usually unless time is short. Road not very busy but sometimes drivers go too fast.

My best ride of the year so far was from Leuchars to Tayport on the hard Tentsmuir Sand after it was uncovered by the low tide - nobody else around. Not one for 25mm tyres though - hard sand would probably be fine for them but getting to the shore from the dunes paths certainly wouldn't.
I enjoyed playing in the woods on the return journey as well. A lovely part of the world and luckily part of my LA in Covid times.
