Its the engine cover which protects the engine's underside from road dirt etc... also helps with airflow under the car. They are not cheep too!

Absolutely classic Someone Elses Problem field. It wasn't supposed to be there, it couldn't be there so they just drove straight at it.
"I thought 'If I brake, that'll be it' because there was a lorry behind me. So I went into it."
I wonder what happened with the lorry then? Application of the brakes would have slowed her at braking pace whereas application of a 2ft boulder must have stopped her pretty instantly.

In her defence:
Today Ms Lester, known as Dynamic Di, said she had feared she was "done for" after she careered into the 2ft-tall boulder at 4.45am
I've re read the article and it appears to be by the junction with Clermiston Road north, by the Council Quarry site I assume the boulder wasn't painted Yellow or Orange??
