Brewick > Duns (via A6105 avoiding chain bridge) > Gifford (B6355) > Tranent > Edinburgh?

Hilly but fairly quiet from memory

It really depends whether you want short or flat. I think shortest would be diverting from e87's route at Chirnside to go north of Duns and up past the Whiteadder reservoir (being careful of your pronunciation). Then Gifford, Dalkeith and make your way home from there.

In my experience the A6105 is busy for the area (still quiet compared to Edinburgh though). If time allowed I would probably stick further south and go through Paxton then up towards Duns before either going via the reservoir or up the Longformacus road (hillier but shorter).

If you wanted flatter then I would suggest north to Ayton and over Coldingham law (which no one ever described as flat). Pick up the NCN1 which is then all tarmac/sealed (but narrow in places) until Haddington where you either divert onto the A199 down to Musselburgh or find your way through the south of the city.

Of course that's just the tarmac options. If you wanted to avoid them there's plenty of gravel options to get over the Lammermuirs.

+1 for the @acsimpson 'flatter route': coming from the south, the route over Coldingham Law is a steady climb that (to my mind at least) passes without you noticing it. The NCN routes you down to the beach at Pease Bay, but the ascent back up is up the gentle side, rather than the bonkers steep side.

I had forgotten about Pease Bay. It's a very steep descent down with poor visibility so you essentially just trade height for heat in your brakes. The alternative is about 100m on the A1 followed by a trip through Cockburnspath. The A1 isn't too hostile, from memory there is one bridge to cross but otherwise a useable verge.

It's around the same amount of climbing either way though.
