Also I think @algo has plans to hire a van for one-way bike returns

Update - there is now a separate eventbrite for those wanting to get to Glasgow in time for the march - https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pedal-to-cop26-march-from-edinburgh-arriving-glasgow-by-1230pm-tickets-191389209277

Whichever ride you opt for, there will be a couple of vans transporting bikes back but space will be limited and your bike will be carried at your own risk

There will be two vans for those signing up to the CM and PoP rides - I have sourced some cardboard for protection between the bikes and will be asking folk to take their own pedals (I will happily remove and refit). I'll rotate handlebars 90 degrees too.

I am hoping two Lutons will suffice for those that want to use the vans, but prepared to drop at the bike Station on Saturday evening and go back if necessary for a second lot - although obv hoping to avoid this.

The CM slower ride seems to be showing the route along the A89, rather than the parallel bike path by the railway from Bathgate to Airdrie.

I wouldn't be keen on taking kids along the A89. Is this confirmed as the route?

I don't know what I think about using vans to assist with going to a protest about climate change... I understand why it is being done, but I don't know what I think about it.

@fimm - it's not great I agree but I think many folk won't be able to cycle back and a lot are concerned about how they'll get their bike back.

Our @COP26_Coalition flyers are so gorgeous we almost don't want to give them up but we need to get the word out about our Cycling and Sustainable Transport bloc at the big Climate Justice march! Can you help spread the word?

    Hi all,

I just logged on to post about the Pedal on COP26 ride and saw there was already a thread! In any case I will put the latest info:

    https://www.eventbrite.com/e/edinburgh-to-glasgow-pedal-on-cop26-tickets-170370899948

222 people signed up, and just over half looking for help with transporting bikes back. 3 vans hired for returning bikes, probably doing multiple trips (people on trains, fingers crossed for strike to be resolved by then).

We are still looking for stewards (blocking junctions, filling in gaps where the group starts to drift apart etc), please email edincriticalmass@gmail.com if you are interested. Also email that address if you have any questions/suggestions.

And Edinburgh Critical Mass monthly ride is this Saturday 30th October, I will do another thread about that!

    “We're not expecting massive numbers“

Given the distance, time of year and problems/unknowns about return trips, that was entirely understandable/reasonable.

Personally I was less surprised by the turnout at the first PoP than some of the organisers, but for today, I’M AMAZED!!!

Absolute congratulations to anyone who was involved in any way - especially anyone who set off (and most made it all the way).

As we all know, cycling can/should be fun, but today’s ride was much more than just a jolly.

An IMPORTANT one-off event, BUT I suspect it will make a few more people think about ‘thinking/acting locally’ - especially at a time when CEC is caving in to business as usual.

Even without Climate Change/Crisis, basic pleasant/liveable cities are more important than ever.

Saw one description as like being inside a washing machine.

Friend in Inverkirkcaig says is good day when the rain is vertical.

I think Glasgow today rain was somewhat horizontal.

Hope everyone makes it back in good time

I'm sure there was an earlier rush but the 7 o'clock has bikes onboard and space and seats for more.

It was a pretty incredible ride. Something very special about cruising a rolling roadblock of 200 odd riders into Glasgow on a Saturday lunchtime.

“Looks like it was getting dark as they arrived?”

That was the second, slower group.

I met one rider who had only gotten her (heavy) bike that morning and hadn't ever ridden in the UK before. Great spirit, but I was a bit worried.

Gave another one my spare gloves. and saw others who looked poorly prepared in terms of clothes and bikes.

hoping some of them got into trains and still made it across.

    the headwind was brutal

Speaking about the march, ACC Ritchie said: "Glasgow has today hosted a public protest the size and scale of which was beyond anything many of us - both within and outwith policing - can ever remember

    https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/more-20-activists-arrested-during-25397769

More than “Stop the War” or Indy rally?

Doesn’t matter, think this one will have more effect on people - whether they took part or not.

Growing realisation that it’s not a binary - CC stopped, or not.

However much individuals can do by ‘lifestyle changes’ or ‘consumer choices’, MUCH more has to be done by Govs, LAs and ESPECIALLY large businesses and corporate organisations.

Encouraging ‘active travel’ IS a KEY part of all this.

Consumer choice is helpful. Taking to the streets is necessary, Governments have to be made to leave fossil fuels in the ground.

“Governments have to be made to leave fossil fuels in the ground.“

    I agree.

Need to be proper discussions about “transition”.

Unspoken assumption is that it will be (or at least has to be to get public agreement) ‘smooth’.

It won’t, it almost certainly can’t be, certainly isn’t in the parts of the world experiencing major weather events/rising sea levels.

How much does it matter if you can’t fly for a holiday?

How much does it matter if you can’t own/use a car?

How much does it matter if the lights go off?

How much does it matter if there aren’t 20 varieties of pasta in the supermarket?

Business as previous is clearly not an option (for most people).

    What are the options/sacrifices/benefits etc?

ARobComp do you think there were as many as 200 in the faster group? I've seen 200 quoted for the whole group on the Edinburgh - Broxburn bit.

Whatever the numbers, it was a great experience in spite of the weather. Cycling places you'd never normally cycle, because of the huge safety in numbers effect, was brilliant! Most people appeared supportive or at least tolerant, but even for the grumpy, there are 200 of us and what exactly are you going to do about it?

At least one person cycled from London...

I decided to cycle to #COP26Glasgow because it didn't feel enough to just turn up and say I was there, I wanted to make my voice count and I didn't know how....

Based on previous PoP numbers, I'd estimate there were over 500, possibly as many as a 1000 in the combined fast and slow groups.

It was certainly much bigger than the Roseburn protest (200). And to fill both lanes of the A8 dual carriageway would take big numbers - the group did not stretch out into one lane until after the airport.

A careful picking through of stickman's video or the photo from the Gogarburn bridge could give a clue to the numbers.

I thought I saw someone counting as we left the meadows - standing near NMW on Melville drive?

I also thought it felt bigger than 200.

I've been in carefully counted (by Chdot) feeder rides of 100, and this seemed more than twice as big. (but those rides may ahve had more kids, which might throw off my reckoning).
