LibDems choosing to remain in opposition. Wise strategy: let Labour take the heat for the difficult stuff, blame the SNP/Greens for everything else, and claim any successes are down to them:

Why we’ll continue as an opposition group, voting on an issue-by-issue basis.

Can a party really claim to be in opposition when they set the annual budget? (Value £1.2bn)

Labour are in charge of implementing the budget.

If things go wrong then Labour are to blame.

If things go well then it’s because the LibDems allocated the money.

Kevin Lang is pure porcelain: none of the sh*t will stick.

I'm not sure if Twitter feeds you can't reply to are a sign of Lib Dem's or Twitter's failure as an entity. If I wanted the Lib Dem news I wouldn't have removed myself from their mailing list.

If the best thing you can say about a party is that they aren't the Tories then there isn't much worth saying.

For anyone following Full Council, myself and Green colleagues - as well as others in the room, judging from their faces - are appalled and dismayed at some of the comments relating to LGBT+ rights made by the Council leader and others today. We will issue a full statement later.

SNP Cllrs will vote to sack Labour/Tory/LibDem coalition that has badly let our city down.

    This year they’ve:
    -ended council house building
    -broken promises to unions
    -received worst IJB inspection report
-ignored Council decisions, been held in contempt of Council & more…

Councillors have voted 33 to 29 in favour of Labour staying in power - Lab/LD/Tory in favour and SNP/GRN against.

Last May, we elected 10 fantastic new Green councillors!

Since then, they have been making a real difference to the people of Edinburgh.

We look back at just some of their Green Wins from the past year:

Delighted to have been elected along with @susan4leithwalk as co-convenors of the Edinburgh Green councillors group to succeed @AlysGreens and @CllrBenParker at our group AGM this evening.

I'm grateful for the support of my colleagues in taking on this role

    1/3

I want to pay tribute to the great work of Alys & Ben over the last two years in the position. I look forward to working with Susan to continue their work of holding the council administration to account, especially on tackling the climate emergency and ending poverty.
    2/3

The @EdinburghGreens councillor group will continue to work constructively & will support the council administration when they get things right, but will not hesitate to call them to account when they get things wrong.

Louise Watson Spence of the Scottish Liberal Democrats has been duly elected to serve in the City of Edinburgh Council for the Colinton/Fairmilehead Ward #EdinByElection

Labour leaflets said their grip on administration depended on winning this by-election. Now they've lost, pretty devastatingly, will @cllrcammyday stand by that and resign?

Scottish Labour's Sheila Gilmore ran to replace him and ultimately came in a shock third place, thirteen votes behind Scottish Tory candidate Neil Cuthbert – who had 1454 votes.

The shock loss comes after the party won three other by-elections today, also all seats that were resigned by former councillors turned new Scottish Labour MPs.

Misleading National article there - they have only counted first preference votes. If you look at the transfer votes then Sheila Gilmour was second, with Neil Cuthbert third.

Turnout was down almost twenty percentage points on 2022 which will have had an impact. Still, a bad day at the office for Labour - but also poor for the Tories in what should be their heartland. The SNP vote also fell considerably.

268 votes for Reform UK (3.6%), not too far off the Greens with 393 votes (5.3%). Given that it only takes 5% of a Holyrood list vote to get an MSP, on this evidence, it isn't impossible that the next Scottish Parliament will see one or more Reform UK members.

"Hey Louise, would you like to be the by-election candidate?"
"As long as there's no chance of me winning."
"Not a problem. No Lib Dem has ever been elected here."

    ...

    "Oops"

The person who stood not wanting to win is apparently off to work in Dubai

THatcher was the first sitting British PM to visit the UAE. I wonder how big that bung was.

@morningsider - discussing bog roll is fine on this thread. Mrs Garto despises my use of the term bog roll - she prefers Loo Paper.
