Cammy Day has resigned as council leader, and been suspended from the Labour Party, following allegations that he "bombarded" Ukrainian refugees with inappropriate messages. As far as I can tell he hasn't resigned as a councillor.

A new council leader will apparently be chosen at next Thurday's full council meeting. Could easily be an entirely new administration.

This is the chat. CammyD was tough enough to brassneck his tiny minority but with him deposed labour will wilt to the song of Sinitta

“It’s a decision for Councillor Day to make in regards to his position as leader of Edinburgh City Council” @cllr_jenkinson refuses to be drawn on whether Cammy Day should resign from post after suspension from the Labour group over inappropriate texts & a police investigation.

Labour has been urged to “set out clearly and convincingly” why other parties should back them to continue running the City of Edinburgh Council.

All sorts of rumours going around.

Clear that many Cllrs are mainly interested in the interests of themselves/their Parties rather than ‘the City’.

Somewhat disappointing in view of imminent financial crises, but no surprise…

    Rumour…

EXC: Edinburgh Council is investigating claims ex leader Cammy Day is potentially an unregistered landlord.

A leaked email by the council CEO reveals a visit was made to a property of his yesterday.

    More rumours

    Related to above

Probably have to resign as cllr

Seems future governance of CEC depends on the cards the LibDems choose to play

All a game to too many politicians

Day’s suspension from the party amid a police investigation has left the Labour group – which has been in minority administration of the city since 2022 – with just 10 out of the council’s 63 seats. As the Evening News reports: “Labour took control of the council after the last local elections in May 2022 thanks to the votes of Lib Dem and Tory councillors, thwarting a rival power bid by an SNP-Green coalition. Some Lib Dem and Tory councillors were given “non-political” roles in return for their support.”

Hearing the Edinburgh Labour group meeting last night was shambolic… all bets are off for which way the administration vote will go on Thursday

I do think most councillors want to represent their wards as best they can, I am always astonished when I hear folk say, “I didn’t stand for election to be in opposition” . What does that mean? That they have no respect for the basic duties of a councillor?

The candidates standing in the forthcoming Colinton/Fairmilehead by-election have been confirmed.

13 candidates have been nominated to stand in the by-election, which will elect two new councillors, on Thursday 23 January 2025.

I wonder which Labour or Labour-adjacent councillors have agreed to clear the way for this?

    Popcorn time...

    @ MD

Not enough to guarantee a straightforward majority.

Katrina Faccenda posted this earlier -

The political leadership of Edinburgh Council is in crisis. Any decision tomorrow cannot bring the stability

Tweet went on to call for decision to be ‘continued’

Presume she thinks Lab will find harmony over festive period…?!

Either Lab will NOT try to carry on tomorrow OR some Cllrs may find it hard to back any ‘business as usual’.

What other parties propose will be public later this evening.

This is what she said yesterday

With much talk from council politicians about maintaining the status quo for “stability” I was puzzled because it has felt far from stable since 2022. So I looked it up and I think I am right, what do you think? (Or could some politicians just be making it up)

Don’t know when this was written

I appreciate it doesn’t always feel like the council is delivering the services you need. I want the council to prioritise the voices of communities and workers.

    Another Lab Cllr (previously)

Over the weekend, Edinburgh Labour MP Scott Arthur got into a spat on social media with Labour councillor Margaret Graham over the future of the council, with Graham saying Arthur should "keep quiet".

She suggested the Labour group do not “have the moral authority anymore” to decide on what happens going forward.

    V interesting debate

Lot of unhappiness with Labour, eg

    .
    @lezleymarion
: call out her group's pick for council leader Jane Meagher (who's dialled in from Tanzania) for not speaking. She raises doubts her group has the 'capability and energy' to handle the workload of staying in administration

Meagher turns her camera off in response

    Rollcall vote on main event

    What does this mean?

Did they just vote NOT to continue with Labour admin? But then to keep the status quo? I don't follow...

    Apologies

Rollcall vote is where names of people are actually noted/minuted

Status quo means it’s still Lab minority (or Super Minority as some other Cllrs called it!).

Anyone who thinks there will now be “stability” is probably deluded.

By-election for two new Cllrs in Jan.

    The circus rolls on.
