Two former SNP and Labour councillors who quit their own parties to stand as independents have joined the Scottish Greens.

Came to say - has anyone heard of the Lib Dem candidate? Ruth Elliot for Labour I think we’ve mentioned here as a prolific ‘content creator’ on Instagram including a whole bunch of videos about cycling in Edinburgh; I have it on good authority they are a former Green which makes more sense to me but I believe may have joined Labour over the issue of Independence.
The Lib Dem ‘cycling campaigner’ though, I’m surprised to have not heard or seen around… quote from interview with the Edinburgh Reporter:

Yes that seems fair - I recall that on a national level at least, they seem to be more pro-cycling, and that we just have a weird local group (much like with Living Streets... something in the water)
And of course, there are and continue to be 'good' LD councillors like Caldwell, Djikstra-Downie...
Actually makes me chuckle to see figures like Elliot and Khovanov potentially entering these local groups (only one, I suppose!) in a 'cat amongst the pigeons' sort of way.

Where exactly are they?
The only ones I can think of are the 2 very short sections along Buccleuch St and St Leonard's St. Which means that "across Southside Newington" is a bit of a stretch.
Also: "fiLL tHE poTHoles" == massive distraction from what needs to be done
Southside / Newington lanes down to Cameron Toll - Minto St / Mayfield Gdns / Craigmillar Park etc . The worst of the travelling safely lanes in terms of how bad the road condition was before they were fitted - quite dangerous really.

Exactly this point was made, at every possible opportunity, by Spokes during the various Spaces for People/Travelling Safely consultations. Nothing was ever done, of course.
The prospective councillor may also have off-road routes, such as the Innocent path and the Meadows paths, in mind?
True - not as sure about the Innocent but Meadows paths generally fairly good condition?
Sadly unsurprising about the condition of road and Spokes being ignored on it.

Don't think we can call the bollarded lanes down Minto St / Mayfield Gdns / Craigmillar Park "decent" though.
They have no coverage of the most critical safety part of any route, namely the junctions
Decent as compared to paint only. Any protection decent as compared to nothing. Bit by bit!
Lorenzo from the Greens also attended and addressed the Saturday Critical Mass cycle to Porty. Isabella from the Greens is one of The Cycling Gardeners. Ruth from Labour was a Green. Vote Green!

I’m sure there will be people here who will be discussing cycle infrastructure with her…
The problem with by-elections in multi ward seats, is that they are more like FPTP than PR as only one candidate is being elected
Both winners are likely to be reelected next year, but there’s a lot for all Parties to ‘play for’
It could be argued that the SNP were unwise/overoptimistic to call by-elections (though presumably it was primarily up to sitting candidates?) - or perhaps more ‘democratic(?)
Whether all Cllrs should stand down if elected as MSPs or MPs is a valid Q
