Sorry for randomly posting here, but could we borrow the PoP blue marshals bibs for this?

Curiously, I received an event flyer to my work e-mail address, which was unexpected. What mailing list is being used?

I have replied to arellcat through a PM.

No contact details from this site used, in case anyone was worried (I wouldn't have access to them even if i did want to).

I'm glad I saw this, I was beating myself up for missing it on Friday. When it wasn't actually happening.

This is no guarantee that I'll remember next Friday.

"The ride will highlight the urgent need for night-time cycling infrastructure that is safe for women. We are calling on The City of Edinburgh Council to prioritise safe and comfortable protected or off-carriage way cycle infrastructure on well-lit routes.

We want the local authority to provide well-signed routes that are permeable and always have a way out, and to develop routes which use natural surveillance where possible, for example streets with high footfall."

I intend to come along, bringing Mini-G (now aged 16, for those who've known her since she was littler) on the back of the Tern now that I've fixed its puncture.

It is an interesting reflection on the need for this ride that Mrs G won't let Mini-G come unaccompanied, and that speaks volumes for why things like this are important.

excellent @greenroofer! I think now-taller-than-SRD (the cyclist formerly known as mini-SRD) will be on tandem with me, unless we loan it to someone and ride our own bikes.

@fimm, have you managed to sort out the marshall's bibs? Alex Robertson has them, I think, and I've just messaged him to see if it could be feasible to get them there.

Hi NiallA yes, I've been in touch with Alex, and am going to get the bibs from him some time this week.
    Thank you!

Tonight! Hope to see lots of you there.

Light Up The Night Cycle Ride – Briefing
Thank you for signing up to our cycle ride. We’re looking forward to seeing you all.
Please read the ride briefing below. It has been designed to keep everyone safe and comfortable during the event. The route is at the end of the briefing.
    Before the ride:
Please make sure your bike is road ready. We’d suggest checking the tyres are pumped up, the brakes are working, and wheels are turning freely.
Please check here before you head off for any unexpected cancellation.
Please wear warm clothes/gloves/socks/shoes. It will be cold and we will be riding slowly. Remember to light up your bike!
Please try and arrive at Middle Meadow Walk around 7.15pm so that we can depart at 7.30pm.
    At the ride:
Please stay in between the front and back marshals.
If you are a naturally slow rider, or not confident, please ride towards the front.
Please give each other space during the ride: we are still in a pandemic and you need space to manage potholes, and unexpected slowing or swerving by riders near you.
We need to keep everyone together in a big group for the whole ride. For this to work we will go at a slow pace, especially on uphill sections. Please try not to let any big gaps open as this will create splits, and risks vehicles getting in amongst cyclists. We are much safer together.
Please stay on the left hand side of the road. Do not get in the way of oncoming vehicles.
The front of the ride will obey traffic signals etc, and the whole group will follow on. There will be marshals helping with this at junctions and roundabouts. This is to keep us all safe - it is not to antagonise drivers.
If the front leaders need to slow down or stop they will shout 'slow/stopping'. Please obey these messages and pass the message back through the group. Do the same for right and left turns.
Please be aware of the varying conditions on the road and take extra care on the cobbled section.
If you have a mechanical breakdown or you are feeling unwell, please move off the road onto the pavement if you can. Wave down a marhsal and we will do what we can to offer support. We have a first aider and people with bike mechanic skills on the ride.
If an emergency vehicle comes from behind (blue lights/sirens), please move over to the left and return to the road once the vehicle has gone through. Obey any calls from the marshals.
We will be taking up road space that is not normally taken up by a large group of people on cycles on a Friday night.
Do smile and wave and ring your bells but only if you can do safely while riding as a group. We'll be on our most polite behaviour.
    Enjoy the ride!
At the end of the ride:
Given the Covid situation, we will not be going on anywhere for a drink afterwards. However, if you’d like to stay around for a chat (we’d love that!) please bring a flask of something hot to drink and something to eat. We’ll be doing this at the Pavilion in the Meadows so that people can visit the ‘solidari-tree’ or ‘Sarah’s tree’ by Jawbone Walk which has tributes to Sarah Everard and many other women who have been victims of gender-based violence.

I’d hoped to make it tonight but can’t now- my wife had a nasty fall on a patch of black ice so I’m currently trying to look after her. Slight role reversal as it’s usually her looking after me! Hope it goes smoothly tonight, at least it’s decent (if cold) weather-wise

Hope she is not too sore this morning.

Last night’s ride was a great success. I had 120 minimum; other suggestions around 200. Someone counted 152 in one if the video clips.

At least two councillors attended- Lesley Macinnes and Cammy Day. Others planned to attend but I didn’t see them (but it was super hard to recognize people!).

Some really good pix/vids on Twitter (and elsewhere - https://andycatlin.myportfolio.com/light-up-the-night-10-december-2021 ).

Someone may or may not want to say how the lighting at the end happened.

As might have been expected, plenty of CCEers involved.

    It was tremendous.

I loved the dynamics of the event, and in particular the polite but unbendingly firm approach of the marshals.

I learned that the Tern needs more weight over the front wheel while riding slowly with my daughter on the back, as it required too much concentration to ride in a straight line for me to be able to relax completely and enjoy the atmosphere. I have sore shoulders today from wrestling with it.

My daughter rightly told me off for saying to her that a teenage girl in front of us, on a bike with the saddle too low, was a novice and unable to ride in a straight line and was therefore causing me problems as I couldn't easily react to her. As she said, that girl was exactly who this ride was about and it was great to see her there.

sorry we didn't see you Greenroofer! My tandem similarly difficult to steer at low speed with mostly grown up stoker. Made her cycle me home. also need to get our crank shorteners taken off!

there was one girl, who was struggling with a bike that was a bit too big for her. i was a bit worried she might cause a little chaos, but she did fine.

@laidback they are yours anyway. you 'loaned' them to us (or threw in as bonus).

But do you remember? we tried to take them off a few years ago and failed. think it will take bikeworks or someone.

Not sure they are fit to hand on...but of course happy to give them back to you!
