The decision means that the UK has missed out on building a second Ineos vehicle, after Ratcliffe, a vocal Brexit backer who is resident in Monaco for tax purposes, chose a French factory for the original Grenadier.

It came as AMTE Power, a small producer of lithium ion batteries, separately said it was considering building its first factory capable of production at the scale of gigawatt hours a year in the US, rather than in Dundee as previously planned.

Ms Forbes' group said that a Scottish economy powered solely by renewable energy, with surpluses exported – as electrons or green hydrogen - to supply the energy needs of UK and European neighbours, and generate income for Scotland’s finances, "is within reach".

"We would argue that there are two underpinning objectives, or outcomes, that our economic strategy, and policies, have to deliver," she said.

"To eradicate poverty, including reducing financial pressures on those who are ‘struggling to get by’, and to deliver our environmental ambitions, including Net Zero and biodiversity.

We are, rather shockingly, top of the private jet league in Europe. Last year, a private jet took off from the UK once every six minutes - and many of these journeys could, according to a recent report, easily have been done by train. One, between Blackbushe and Farnborough in Hampshire, could even have been cycled in 30 minutes.

Britons who keep gardens green should get council tax cut, study suggests

Move suggested to tackle rise in plastic grass and paving, which exacerbate wildlife loss, flooding and summer heat

But here’s the bad news. While we obsess about our kids as individuals, we’re missing a last-ditch collective chance to save them from environmental catastrophe.

In other words, more communication, more bikes and trains, less meat and dairy; more time outside and fewer throwaway gadgets or plastic toys. (In the process of focusing on outdoor play, incidentally, we could directly boost our children’s physical and mental health.)

THE UK government will today face a legal challenge over "reckless" plans to award more than 100 new licences for North Sea oil and gas exploration in a court bid to stop proposed fossil fuel production.

Campaign group Greenpeace will go to the High Court to halt the sanctioning of a new licensing round and block the further exploration.

    Well! This is super scary

It's almost like we should apply the precautionary princple and stop burning fossils immediately...

    ...and yeah, people will adapt

    From link

One factor that could be influencing the level of heat going into the oceans is, interestingly, a reduction in pollution from shipping.

In 2020, the International Maritime Organisation put in place a regulation to reduce the sulphur content of fuel burned by ships.

This has had a rapid impact, reducing the amount of aerosol particles released into the atmosphere.

But aerosols that dirty the air also help reflect heat back into space - removing them may have caused more heat to enter the waters.

Didn’t notice date, was on Twitter amongst things on current action in London which ‘isn’t getting reported because it’s peaceful’.

Current XR happenings apparently *reason* current PM’s car was escorted by police on bikes and running yesterday!!!

Only seen video on Twitter so could all be fake news…

John Kerry: relying on technology to remove carbon dioxide is ‘dangerous’

Exclusive: US climate envoy says existing measures, such as shift to renewable energy, must be deployed faster to stop global warming

The UK must also pile efforts into net zero, he added. “Everybody in the world [needs a net zero strategy],” he said. “The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change made it crystal clear that we’re not on the track we need to be … everything needs to be increased exponentially in effort.”

Meanwhile, since Joe Biden became president, a more pressing concern has been climate finance. How should the US finance the infrastructure investment required for climate mitigation and adaptation? In this case the key policymaking entity has been the National Economic Council. Its director until February this year? The ex-head of “sustainable investing” at BlackRock. And the outcome? A policy based on government subsidisation of investment in clean-energy infrastructure by private-sector actors such as BlackRock itself.

Skidmore told the Guardian: “There is no such thing as a new net zero oilfield. Approving Rosebank would undermine UK claims to climate leadership on the world stage, undermine what the climate science tells us and undermine our efforts to achieve a net zero Britain by mid-century. To enhance our energy security, the government must say no to Rosebank, and instead give the green light to energy efficiency, rooftop solar, onshore wind and other forms of clean energy supply.”

BP company secretary Ben Matthews apologised to shareholders for the language and conduct of the protestors as they were removed, with a smattering of applause heard from some shareholders at the meeting, before returning the floor to Lund.

A string of pension funds are expected to vote against Lund’s re-election at this year’s AGM after BP watered down its green commitments earlier this year without consulting investors.

Spirit Energy’s chief executive, Neil McCulloch, added: “Continuing to secure reliable and responsible supplies of energy from the UK continental shelf has never been more important. Spirit Energy is delighted to welcome first gas from the joint venture’s most recent investment in Cygnus, as gas continues to be a key energy source in the transition towards net zero.”

Ali Hussein Jaloud, a 21-year-old Iraqi who lives next to one of BP’s biggest oilfields, was meant to ask a question at the company’s annual shareholder meeting today. He was going to challenge the CEO on why his company continues to poison his neighbourhood with cancer-causing pollution. But, just a few days ago, Ali died of a form of leukaemia that has been linked to chemicals released by the burning of fossil fuels. His grieving father will ask why BP did not use its vast profits to help save his life.

I wonder if the Herald will do a similar article on the number of jobs claimed to be created by road building schemes and what they actually turn out to be? Or city centre beer gardens?

In any case, surely it’s a good thing if we can have wind turbines built with fewer jobs, that makes them cheaper & quicker to install. The whole article sounds like jobs for jobs sake

    Yes to all that

Herald not a fan of SG…

Though there are questions as to whether anyone (politicians and others) believed all/most of the jobs would be IN Scotland.

PLUS whether any more c/should be here.

But what does this matter if the Scottish Government has been hijacked by financial interests and the real agenda is to use public money (leveraging) to enable “investors to generate sustainable returns”? Contrary to NatureScot’s claims above, it would be far fairer if public money was used in the public interest for public benefit and companies like BrewDog, which claim they are buying up land to mitigate their carbon emissions, were thrown the gauntlet and left to fund any restoration work themselves. That would help differentiate the private greenwashers, starting at the top with King Charles (see here), from the real private conservationists.
