Rishi Sunak has used a helicopter to travel to and from an engagement in Norwich, a trip of little more than 100 miles, Downing Street has confirmed, in yet another example of the prime minister’s fondness for flying brief distances.

Sunak flew from London to join Michael Gove, the communities secretary, at a Taylor Wimpey housing development, to mark a change to planning regulations that will scrap rules on chemical releases into waterways.

It's always nice to "mark" another downgrading of environmental protection regulations with a high-CO2-emitting jolly.

    Introduction

Now is the time for the Scottish Government to retain its strong commitment to deliver a net zero, climate resilient economy by providing stability and direction within the political and economic headwinds and the ‘climate culture war’ headlines. It needs to show steadfast leadership and consistency of purpose to apply all the levers it has to build a strong low carbon economy, improve quality of life, reduce people’s bills, create green jobs and new green industries.

With climate records broken on land and sea, and impacts already exceeding the predictions of climate scientists, we are entering ‘unchartered territory1’ in the climate emergency. Every fraction of a degree matters, action is ever more urgent, and the way forward is clear.

Public support for climate action remains high, but people are held back by a lack of certainty, financing and infrastructure to make changes to their homes, travel and lifestyle, whilst investors and businesses are held back by an unstable and uncertain policy environment. In contrast to what we see in the headlines, businesses and investors are actually asking for ‘faster political action on climate change mitigation and the need for a policy landscape to support this consensus’2 , and almost half of Scottish adults say the government (49% of respondents) and local authorities (53%) are not currently doing enough to help Scotland meet net zero emissions3.

Lol, serves them right for moaning like lickle babbies about the protestors blocking their luxury campervans on road on the way in for a couple of hours - may the piggies who drew on the protestors and threatened to "take 'em out" enjoy equally poetic justice in the near future.

Acropolis and Air Charter Scotland both use carbon offsetting giant South Pole, a company that was this year forced to deny allegations it had overestimated the benefits of its projects and claimed up to 30 times more carbon credits than it should have done.

An unusual omega weather system – in which a zone of high pressure is sandwiched between two areas of low pressure – is being blamed for both the unseasonal heatwave in the UK and the catastrophic flooding in Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey.

At least 12 people have died in the three countries as torrential rainstorms caused flash floods, sweeping away bridges and inundating streets, homes and public buildings.

In north-west Turkey, at least seven people died after heavy rains unleashed a torrent that swept through a campsite in the north-western Kırklareli province, near the border with Bulgaria.

Unite still pays significant affiliation fees to Labour, amounting to almost £1.1m in 2023 so far, but Graham said additional resources from the union’s political fund would now go into campaigning on specific policies.

She cited energy nationalisation, oil and gas, where Unite wants Labour to reverse its decision not to grant new North Sea licences, and government support for steelmaking.

“In Wales, in Scunthorpe … there’s 16 steel towns where we are taking our policies to the people of those towns and saying: ‘Whoever comes in here needs to give this commitment to steel,’” she said.

Unite is calling for Labour to allocate some of its £28bn a year of green investment funds to greening the steel industry – and promise to use British steel in all public infrastructure schemes.

Similarly, the union will target Scottish constituencies where there are oil and gas workers, calling for energy nationalisation, and a continuation of North Sea extraction until workers can move into new green jobs through a “just transition”.

“I don’t think there’s a family in Scotland that’s not connected to the oil and gas industry,” she said, claiming that many are “absolutely furious” about Labour’s policy on energy.

Climate change made the storm that devastated the Libyan city of Derna, killing thousands of people, up to 50 times more likely, experts say.

Up to 50% more rain had fallen as a result of human-caused greenhouse-gas emissions, climate scientists at the World Weather Attribution group found.

Rishi’s plan not getting universal support -

A Labour spokesperson said: "This is a total farce. The country cannot go on with a Conservative government in total disarray, stumbling from crisis to crisis.

"Ministers need to urgently provide clarity on all eight of the policies reportedly up for review."

Conservative MP Chris Skidmore, the former chairman of the UK government's net zero review, said diluting green policies would "cost the UK jobs, inward investment, and future economic growth that could have been ours by committing to the industries of the future".

"Rishi Sunak still has time to think again and not make the greatest mistake of his premiership, condemning the UK to missing out on what can be the opportunity of the decade to deliver growth, jobs and future prosperity," he said.

Conservative peer Lord Zac Goldsmith, who resigned as a minister earlier this year with a scathing attack on Mr Sunak's "apathy" over climate change, said the prime minister was "dismantling" the UK's credibility on environmental issues.
