@Murun, That's certainly the way it works for events with Mandatory routes (eg LEL). Of course the further you go off route the harder you have to work to ensure you keep within the required speed range.

After I missed out on @edinburgh87's Christmas Tour of Midlothian 100 we did as the New Year's Tour of Midlothian with @edinburgh87 and @amir.
A really lovely route, the sun was shining and the wind blowing. For @edinburgh87 and @amir these were largely their regular WFH routes but for me they were mostly new as I don't go that way very often.Highly recommend it to anyone for the next year.

Thanks for the idea and company @bill + @amir. Definitely a humbling experience in those westerlies!
I think (and most of my entrants seemed to agree) that the "worst" part of the route is the flatter part between Fala and Gladhouse: annoyingly aligned with the prevailing wind and with an ever so slight positve gradient that creates a feeling of making zero progress but withouth the reward of a 'proper' climb!
PS - as @bill alludes, this will be running again on 27/12/2022 and should be in the AUK calendar soon-ish.

It was a lovely ride, despite the wind. Nice to get some sun and especially to have such good company. Most of my riding at this time of year is sólo so it made a pleasant change.
And well done to acsimpson for 1 Jan!

Thanks @amir, but I was out the same day you were fighting the winds of the 2nd. I made it to 200km but riding with friends and we were making up the route on the road so another Non-Audax 200.
I've got an idea for a February DIY 200 taking in Melbourne, Moscow and California though.

@amir, yes it make for some interesting route choices. I'm keen to ride from Garvald to Garvald and back again this year. It's 200km from central Edinburgh so plenty of scope for a loop.
I also wonder just how many Newbiggings it's possible to collect in a single ride. I suspect you could probably design an audax route of any length where every control is in Newbigging.

@cocoshepherd - not me personally, my next one will be the Christmas Tour of Midlothian in December. Lucy has a 100k from Galashiels in May though.
I did plan to run another 200 in summer but due to other stuff can’t really fit it in.

@edinburgh87 showed his class as an organiser this Saturday with brilliant weather arranged. Not complaining, but a touch warmer at the start and a slightly lighter wind would have been perfect.
The TallaHo! route (alt no 2 - actual route not run yet due to life) was lovely. Lots of quiet routes, brilliant views, and curlews. Talla, remarkably, is no flatter, despite its popularity as a road climb. Would be nice if there was shepherding scheme for motors though, as it is impractical to stop on a push bike.
We made full use of the Walkerburn to Peebles cycle route. Would be lovely if it were extended to Tweedsmuir.
I am looking forward to a flatter 200 as the early season ones have been challenging! At least I didn't fall over twice on this one though.

@amir - wish I had the same luck with D&G council but hopefully third time lucky in 2023. Was good to see most of the usual folks there and also to put a face to another CCE’r (@acsimpson). I think I’m up to 5 or 6 now!
The award for audaciousness (or audacity?) has to go to the father and daughter (11) tandem entrants on Crystal Rig. A pretty serious amount of climbing (1.75AAA) for the distance and with a tandem - and they were back in the middle of the field! Also had 2 ECEing to 300.
All in, about 60 across the two rides so it’s good to see some normality returning!

@edinburgh87 It's great to have events starting so close to home! Also easier for folks from Glasgow to get here as they don't have many events out their way.

@edinburgh87, nice to finally meet you after missing last years events.
The route was mostly very gentle, we extended our route to come home via East Lothian and then headed out again on Sunday afternoon to bring the weekend up to 400km.
Talla with the headwind was an special treat. The normally flat approach felt more like a 5% climb in itself. Thankfully the wind wasn't quite so strong once we made it to Meggat but it was certainly a feature of the day.
The most surprising part of the day for me was the crossing of the Tweed between Selkirk and Galashiels. Apparently the bridge has been almost entirely rebuilt above the arches and the surface now painted with some overdesigned cycle lanes. @bill - I have a plan for a 300 yep, based on the ride you and I did last year but from (or via) North Berwick. Need to prove my worth to AUK towers over two seasons of not screwing up 100/200k events first, so should be able to run in 2023. It’ll probably be X rated, but when I’m in rider mode I prefer that anyway!
