Staggered start. Basically a 2.5 hour time trial :) Did pick up a couple of riders towards the end for a few miles of paceline but most of it was head down into the wind

@nobrakes I have narrowed your real name down to Gary then, not Donald or Roddy?

I was cold this a.m. coming back from Ettrick valley to yarrow valley into a northerly for sure, early doors.

Also spotted fab new cycle path from Peebles to Eddleston nearly complete in some sections, indeed two cyclists used a short stretch to get off A703 motor mania.

    Chapeau on the TT

David… rider 61. ‘Twas a bit chilly at the start and top of the Granites.

For some reason the results were in time order and then flipped to alphabetical order.

Was wondering what that was! Looked quite substantial when I went past a few week ago.

Criminally early start to meet them at Symington

Oi! Sorry! On the contrary I really like those early starts at this time of year (I would even prefer to leave at 4am! ;-)). Lang Whang is delightfully quiet at that time, though I met another cyclist near West Lothian sign at 5.45am and we exchanged a surprised but cheery 'Morning". The AP was open by the time I got to Carnwath to meet my pal NOTP. All new roads for me from New Galloway, through Loch Ken, Castle Douglas, New Abbey, Dumfries, Ae, Beattock, Moffat. The D&G coast looked amazing and we got fine views to the Peak District.

As @edinburgh87 said the back roads between Dumfries and Beattock were very tiring due to the road surface.

I decided to head back home again via Abington and Carnwath instead of the shorter Beef Tub and Tweedsmuir way. I always get annoyed that I can't see the sunset from the valley there. And Indeed the sunset was great and I am glad I got to see it!

I was soloing the final 60k from Abington as it was starting to get dark. Unfortunately the easterly headwind picked up as I was getting to Carnwath, so it was a cold slog back along Lang Whang. A high number of (some very) fast cars made me fear for my life and I often kept checking if my rear light was still on. My head also started feeling quite heavy at the point so my average speed kept dropping. My last (and only) coffee of the day was at 8am so perhaps I should have had some caffeine later in the day. I haven't had this feeling of being so very tired on a bike since August last year so it was a good reminder! With 359k and 2996m of climb I rolled home after midnight. Despite Mr Bill's encouragement I had no interest in pushing them to nice round numbers!;)

Funny that @amir did more climbing in a shorter route than me!

    Me!

Long range forecast looks a bit windy

Me too. Slightly concerned about the forecast wind, and my level of fitness.

Wind and showers? Will be tough both in cycling terms and knowing what to wear!

@panyagua you will be storming up those climbs

I am signed up but I am 50/50 about doing the ride at the moment (more personal reasons than the weather).

Are folks driving in the morning and then back? or staying over?

Not riding (or signed up), got a vague plan for a local 200 (possibly a “pointless” one) down to Eskdalemuir and back via Moffat

I once had a bike with a chainring so pointless the chain slipped…

Exactly that, I’m not sure whether I’ll bother to ride it as a DIY audax) or just ride the loop for its own sake. Both approaches have their appeal.

@chdot - that could have been painful

If an Audax is a bike ride with admin then is a pointless ride one without admin?

    “that could have been painful“

    Yes

Was trying a standing start on Broughton Street and the cranks moved and the wheels didn’t.

Was before internet/ebay/Bike Station, harder to get ‘non standard’ parts!

I guess if filling out the entry form and submitting a GPX file is admin then I suppose, but can be done 5 mins before setting off if one so wishes. Fairly minor. The main difference is I guess if you go grossly off route or change your plans on the day it’s not Audax. Horses for courses really, I’ll still add a layer of bureaucracy by using my handy pacing spreadsheet. DM me if anyone wants a template for your own endeavours, although I’m sure there are many variants in circulation.

Yes, it's not particularly onerous. The hardest part of a simple DIY advisory 200 is getting the GPS co-ordinates for the entry form. As you say with a mandatory route it's even simpler, assuming you normally plan a route in advance anyway.

Not sure you even need coordinates for an advisory route, if there are recognisable place-names.

I’ve never used coordinates for DIYs (mandatory or advisory), just used the town name or even “A702/72 junction” type phrases and have never had any complaints.

That's useful to know. Presumably if your not passing through the centre you need to be more specific.

How accurately do you list distances?

You don't need to put coordinates on the DIY form unless it's somewhere really obscure eg. "156th fencepost after Morag's cottage". If I've no idea where you're talking about I'll ask you.

Lovely meeting @amir and @panyagua on the Snow Roads on Saturday and sharing some miles together. Sadly I didn't get to meet @Murun as he was clearly too fast!

It was a tough Saturday. It started easy with tailwind but once we got higher up and/or turned west and then south the wind (cross and head) was the dominating factor. I think we had about 150k of relentless wind fighting. Luckily the rain stayed off apart from dozen or so spittings.

Lovely roads, great road surface but I didn't have much fun! :-) Definitely the hardest 300k I have done so far.

I drove back home afterwards and made it at 2:15am as it was getting light again. 23 hours after I got up.

    Hope everyone is recovering well!
