    Is the path under the bridge closed? Can’t quite fathom how there would be more risk to those going over the bridge than those under it.

    I mean, the railway paths at night can be a risky business. The main issue appears to be the length of the "diversion" route is significant at the moment because of tram-related closures.

    That and it doubles as their pub's beer garden.

    As much as i do not agree with closing the bridge (what is the real risk of collapse with pedestrian traffic?), the agenda of the current campaigners is pretty clear:

    Leading the campaign is Roisin Therese who, with partner Toby Saltonstall, ​manage​s​ the nearby Dreadnought Pub, which also uses the ​bridge as its beer garden

    council officials said that there’s no budget for repairs or to demolish the bridge, four years after they were first advised the bridge was condemned
