I have not cycled outside for a while but able indoors to cycle with Zwift and teammates. Due to backlog I'm waiting 9 weeks for a NHS physio appt to assess my sciatic RL pain. I have a prolapsed disc at L5 pressing on S1 nerve root and inflammation will not leave. I have tried lots of things turmeric, cbd oil- patches as well as exercises and prescribed drugs. Anybody go through something similar?

That sounds rubbish. Hope the physio helps (when it arrives).

@srd Thanks- even going to a private physio is not enough- you have to wait to get into the system- which is busy- I was told by the dept. that I was on the list and I would get seen face to face and the wait time is 9 weeks. It is a reminder that unless you have good private health care be careful out there as the waiting times are long.

I feel your pain ! As a lorry driver it’s kind of expected ! Bizzarly being on the bike actually helps my pain , Mrs splitshift got me doing her yoga and that helps, short term.Mercian truckers have a sling type thing that they can use in their bigger cabs, they hang in it and it decompressed the spine, am looking for one of them .drugs arnt great and the side effects nasty ! I used to think back pain was the shirkers charter , until I literally woke up and couldn’t get out of bed one morning !

I don't have the same pain as you, but I did have referred pain in my lower back caused by inflammation in the hip, caused by a damaged tendon where it attached to the pelvis... Cortisone injection didn't help, which was really disappointing.

For me, cycling can aggravate the tendon, but is less painful for the hip than walking, even with those nordic poles.

I use a balance board to stand when working on a computer, and try to remember to end my showers with 30 seconds of cold. (sing through the shock!) I think cold water swimming helps some people too.

I think the balance board has really turned it around, as it makes me work lots of tiny muscles in the abdomen and pelvis, but if you don't want to splash cash, put a solid board of some type over a pillow or sofa cushion (not too fluffy!), see how that goes.
