...no I'm not starting a witch hunt here - you're all very nice and I'm sure have better things to do than steal helmets. Some of you will have morals too that preclude you from stealing in general. Probably all of you actually.

I parked my cycle up, locked it up. And left my helmet clipped through the fame thinking who would want to steal a smelly £30 helmet. It wasn't exactly the crime of the century...

Anyway - recommendations on new helmets please. I don't mind dropping some money on a new one - I figure I spend 500+ hrs a year wearing it. I'd like to be able to attach lights to it so one with well placed vents would be nice...

My usual policy is to go into the LBS and see what looks best least stupid sitting atop my head.

You can get yourself a Giro or something for £30. Others can correct / argue with me, but if you spend more than that, all you're getting is different styling and "features" not really neccessary for cycling around town.

Might be worth looking for one that has a large enough vent that you can get the lock cable through. As for colours I recommend yellow. Personally I don't like visors, but there's no reason you shouldn't leave it on if it suits you. Personally I don't like the skateboard / BMX-style ones, but that's cause my head gets hot easily and those look like heat traps.

I don't think anyone who steals an old helmet is doing it for any other reason than to inconvenience you. It probably ended up in the next nearest bin.

If you read the helmet threads (avoid letting it aggravate you) there's a discussion of why 'Specialized' helmets meet a higher safety standard than the others.

The one I wear is yellow. It is Giro. I have an exceptionally large head. Much bigger than Richard Midnight Hatsize Snyder who played in Captain Beefheart's Magic Band.

When LIDL sell them for 9 quid that is Ok - if your heid is small enough but mine has it's own weather systems. Aw that was below the belt, he'll probably be crying himself to sleep tonight ......on his huge pillow [Mile Myers as Scottish Dad in So I Married An Axe Murderer].

When I wear it, I use a Bell "youths" helmet. Because it was the best fit in the shop (and in a sale!). IF they are like motorbke helmets then generally fit is more important than brand/ratings.
Just don't get me started on those who wear helmets perched on the back of their heads like easter bonnets!! lol
