More than a third of households across Scotland have limited or no access to a safe place to store their bike, a report has shown, as the Capital was highlighted as one of the most impacted areas.

More than a third don't have anywhere to store a car - but somehow that's our problem rather than their problem.

I think Morningsider's reply ought to be made post of the month. In fact, it should be projected by laser onto the walls of every available building within sight of a council HQ and news establishment.

There are particular issues relating to accessing, owning, maintaining and storing bicycles that were raised in almost every conversation about cycling.

“I’ve had 5 bikes stolen in 10 years – mine and my sons. Eventually you just give up and don’t replace them.”

Secure Cycle Storage and parking; theft is a real issue, and lack of places to securely store a bike at home, particularly in flats, and lack of proper facilities to lock cycles at local amenities makes people hesitant to purchase a bicycle.

In 1997 my report on cycle parking for DETR & Southampton Council had a specific section on residential parking, and in 1998 I did some preliminary work on residential parking in Edinburgh.

Residential parking also featured in work for Cambridge, and a very specific project for Hackney in 2003, which produced HomeBikePark guidance, and tested several solutions across different types of housing, collecting prices for several options

I revisited Edinburgh in 2005 with an installation for Spokes members near the Commonwealth Pool, storing 6 bikes neatly at the foot of the stairs on a pre-assembled frame, that was erected in the close

The most impressive details from Hackney included the refurbishment of a derelict communal laundry room, with door security and frame-mounted racks, and conversion/refurb of coal stores on the ground floor of LCC walk-ups

The current fashion is hiring out spaces in fietstrommel, supplied by a prominent player across the UK.The cost to install per bike is £600, although this may not be linked to the space rental rates.

With 10 ft ceilings bikes can go up on a pulley and clear most people's heads

Can always revive the work or look at spot projects

We’re going to install 675 new bike hangars in the borough over the next four years - doubling what we have at the moment.

4,000 new secure cycle parking spaces

    Encouraging people to cycle more

    Rebuilding a greener Hackney

I just rented space in one of the on street lockers to store other half's bike and get me more space in stairwell for mine so youngun can store theirs in the hallway... Decent enough price considering how much a parking space costs and is not dedicated to the user...

Still a slight issue that this is a single supplier for almost every council & a single solution for every location

Many others supply fietstrommels & some have very low site preparation costs

Likewise, there are some really neat flat pack steel tool stores that work well for bikes, and other solutions as well

    Yes

    They are quite good though.

    Opportunity for better?
