If I hadn't cancelled my membership already a few months ago, this would have done the trick.

Was never sure why I was a member, think legacy thing from MTB event days maybe. Due for renewal end of Oct so timing good.
anyone got any good suggestions for alt 3rd party liability insurance before I take google's offerings.
update: there was a chap on here a 3 or 4 months ago looking for people to test / feedback on a new cycle insurance provider - Laka. I did that at the time, so picked them when google suggested a pile. 3rd party liability is 1 quid/month.

British Cycling burns well with Shell

3rd party liability insurance
If you are lucky enough to live in a home that you own or is owned by your family, you probably already have 3rd party liability insurance through your home insurance
Not sure if/how tenants are covered, if renting

My contents insurance covers bicycles up to £350 automatically, and any bicycle if you specifically list it. But only against theft, no 3rd party liability.
Other renters may have insurance that covers this, but I don't think I ever have.

I quite like having the reassurance of my Cycling UK membership for third party as well as anything my home insurance might provide. Given the potentially ruinous consequences of a third party claim I'd rather be sure I have bombproof cover - seems too easy to miss a change in policy terms or forget to do due diligence in renewal as it's probably the last thing you'd be looking at.

Fair point, but then you also have to be careful about being "double insured" and then getting into a battle between the two companies over who pays the claim...

from British Cycling Membership email this morning following my cancellation:
Thank you for getting in touch with us.
The Shell partnership is a long-term commitment to cycling, which will bring significant and tangible benefits and help more people consider cycling and cyclists.
It will help us to progress important work to move our business and sport towards net-zero, and to make cycling more accessible for disabled people – matters which we know our members are passionate about.
We will share further details of the first big steps before the end of this year, including an announcement of the Limitless programme and the recruitment of our first Sustainability Manager.
As always, feedback from our members is important, and we’re always seeking to improve our engagement with you.blah blah blah - read the room.

Greenpeace UK described the partnership as ‘brazen greenwash’. “The idea of Shell helping British Cycling reach net zero is as absurd as beef farmers advising lettuce farmers on how to go vegan,” said policy director Dr Doug Parr.

@Desertrat, I think their paste key might be getting a whole lot of use. I received two copies of exactly the same wording. One via email and the other via the member portal (where I requested an address change).

Worth highlighting this response from a disabled cyclist.

@dessertrat and @acsimpson. I got identical wording as well.

Not expecting anyone here to defend BC over this, but any idea if the ‘noise’ is just/mostly Twitter and similar to the CTC name change saga?

While this strikes me as one of the all-time stupid decisions, I suppose British Cycling can just tough it out. People need to be members to take part in races and I suspect a lot of "sport cyclists" probably don't really care - many are happy to support teams sponsored by despotic regimes, petro companies (and Belgian flooring manufacturers).

Not expecting anyone here to defend BC over this
I'm quite happy to take the contrary position on stuff but even I can't think of way of spinning this.
I suspect @morningsider is right and the net result will be no real change for BC. Losing some non racing members has probably already been factored vs a big pay day and the money has spoken. in general if team GB pull in another medal haul no one will remember this. (away from twitter)
It would probably be better for all though if they stopped with the faux advocacy and stuck to sport.

Adfauxcacy, you might say.

I've been a member for a few years just for insurance for sportives etc, but have been meaning to cancel for a while. Just haven't bothered due to having too many things needing done, but this has been a good impetus to get it sorted.

“Our new CEO will join the organisation at an exciting time as we build towards next year’s inaugural UCI Cycling World Championships in Scotland, and the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2024.”
Facer took up the role of CEO of British Cycling in early 2021, joining from rugby union team London Irish as a replacement for Julie Harrington. Prior to joining London Irish, he was commercial director at Northampton Saints.
