Our very good dental practice was bought out last year and the two dentists we went to have both left. We were all registered there as NHS patients, but not keen on being treated by the new owner. <I won't gossip here, but....>

So, looking for a new practice that is actually taking NHS patients. any ideas?

    Preferably central or south Edinburgh.

Mr fimm and I are very happy with the treatment we've received at Gorgie Dental. We are treated on the NHS, but I don't know if they are taking patients at the moment.

Thanks Fimm. will check it out.

We're very sad to have lost two really good dentists, dedicated to NHS work and family dentistry.

    Seconded for Gorgie Dental.

I started there as a private patient years ago (when there were basically no practices in the Lothians taking new NHS patients) and when contractual conditions for NHS work improved the practice transferred me to the NHS.

No change in treatment; the bills just stopped. Can't say fairer than that.

I am with one in Mayfield Gardens. They do NHS. I have not had problems but then I am blessed with no expensive issues (currently).

I am with a dentist in Marchmont (not saying anything more due to the comments to follow, but guess the name). They seem to be pretty open to taking new NHS patients. I get my checkups & standard treatments on the NHS but the couple of crowns I've needed I opted to get done privately; they are quite happy to work that way. (One of the crowns later got binned when the tooth - which had had to have things done to it on and off since the 1980s - finally got to the point where they couldn't guarantee that any remedial work would be either effective or long-lasting, so I had the thing out.)

According to other family members who attend the practice, the owner is a very good dentist but apparently a bit grumpy. The very nice lady dentist who usually treats me is currently off on maternity leave; so far I've only had a checkup with the one standing in for her but she seems fine too. Mrs Stubbs is seen by the other female dentist at the practice and she seems happy with her as well.

The thing about NHS dentists is they are usually newly qualified - which is fine, everyone needs to build experience in their trade. In my experience, they're actually better and less likely to be arrogant and grumpy than the longstanding ones.

Then after about 2 or 3 years they move to a private practice. So my point is, you may find the "perfect" NHS dentist, but they are likely to move on. Best just to choose somewhere local and find out how they are, unless you have very challenging dental work to take care of

Young teeth don’t need private dental contracts

Older teeth sometimes works out cheaper to pay monthly,

This is what my dentist told me. He has same name as the foootball manager who said I’m not saying I’m the best manager in the world but I am in the top one.

Was sort of true but then my gnashers have sort of rallied.

He saw me quickly between Xmas and new year to sand down a wee nbut of broken tooth that happened during Xmas dinner.

I fell out with Mrs Gembo’s dentist when he went private as he wished to charge for the kids which was basically immoral.

@neddie that seems to describe my experience since our (long standing, NHS) family dentist retired a number of years ago. I’ve went through about 3 or 4 dentists since then and just before the pandemic BUPA took over the practice. I did get an email a few months ago extolling the benefits of a private dental plan which I duly ignored. I’m with the Ivy Dental at Old Dalkeith Rd for info

Thanks all - all very helpful.

Sadly our two experienced NHS dentists left because their practice was making it very difficult for them to stay NHS.

So they have gone elsewhere, as NHS dentists, but aren’t allowed to tell us where. And have to be outside a certain radius from the clinic they’re leaving.
