So that's IIRC the two most recently damaged bridges being fixed, but AIUI there are still two other bridges further upstream which have been closed for much longer. I assume that the damage to those ones must just be much worse

On the subject of dodgy structures on the WoL, I happened to be walking across the Lanark Road bridge over the river in Slateford when I noticed this:

I had been wondering why those flats were taking so long to get finished (accompanied by regular short notice TTLs and other disruption to Craiglockhart Avenue and Slateford Road). The reason may now be becoming clear.

Saw them on Tuesday and Wednesday with the funny circular Gabions Making stepping stones and dams.

    That won’t work.

Exciting news, funding has been found and a contractor appointed to deliver Phase 1 of this project from Great Junction St bridge to the North Leith burial ground. P1 Solutions will begin on site on 27th November. Meaning the park and main route will be closed. A diversion will be in place. We know this will be an inconvenience for everyone but we hope this relatively short term pain will lead to a long term gain and a better more useable space for all.

Route round closure (don’t know if it’s signed.)

This should open Cycle Streets https://cycle.st/j92626723 - Water of Leith Path to Sandport Place

    Still don’t know!

So that is the site officially closed, we are sorry for the disruption remember short term pain long term gain. Please respect the closure and follow diversion..some stickers are there to follow but the rain made it tricky to adhere.

I think that there is a signed diversion, but it's along Ferry Road.

The suggested route on the south side of the river utilises a (short) section of footpath, so couldn't be officially used.

If they actually cared, and respected the transport hierarchy, they would temporarily redesignate that footpath (The Quilts) as shared-use.

Or, put a temporary segregated lane down Ferry Rd

    FFS, this shouldn't be difficult

WoL path up here in the hills frosty tonight.

Maybe the wee gritter tractor could go down that way, once you reach canal contour no ice,

gembo’s words are not accidental (sometimes it just seems like it…)

The Union Canal, which has a length of 31 miles (50 km) today, was built as a contour canal. This avoided building costs and future operational delays caused by the provision of locks but necessitated large aqueducts to cross river valleys.

Not at all obvious to me why that should only be done temporarily.

    @neddie:

If they actually cared, and respected the transport hierarchy, they would temporarily redesignate that footpath (The Quilts) as shared-use.

I had been under the impression that, in Scotland at least, responsible cycling was legal on a footpath* i.e. one not alongside a carriageway as part of a road, which is a footway aka pavement. Hence why e.g. it's legal to cycle responsibly on the paths across Bruntsfield Links and the Meadows. So no shared designation is required - it's implicit. (And hence also the objections to the "Cyclists Dismount" signs on the access path into Craigleith retail park from South Groathill Avenue - access to said path from the NEPN having even been facilitated by the provision of a toucan crossing.)

That said: (a) IANAL and (b) I don't know the current layout and signage in that area. So all reasoned and, preferably, evidenced disabusements of any misconception in this regard on my part would be welcome.

    * The "aid to pedestrianism" ruling IIRC.

I used to think this (that as long as it's not a pavement alongside a road, it's fair game) but I feel like last time it came up on CCE more recently, it turned out that they have to designate paths as paths for them to have access rights, or something. It was more contested than I expected.

Finally got round to looking at this on StreetView.

Never been a pavement by a road.

    Quite narrow path between houses.

(Realise I’ve never actually been through there.)

Whatever the precise legals, (there are no “no cycling” signs!), it’s only a short section, so dismount or cycle with care.

Likely to be ‘safer’ than cycling along Ferry Road. How is the signage there?

IIRC for cycling to be banned it needs to be adopted by the LA as a road and all vehicles banned rather than just motor vehicles.

Another ‘solution’ in the area would be PROPER cycle lanes on Gt J St!

A big difference made today by volunteers and members of @EdYoungWalkers at the Quilts,#Leith

As part of the diversion route for Coalie Park it was great to remove years of compacted leaves and widen the path with a cut back.

We are recruiting a Conservation Officer to work along the Water of Leith delivering a comprehensive programme of conservation tasks, river clean ups and survey work with volunteer groups. The successful candidate will lead on our habitat improvement and INNS work (Invasive Non Native Species) with the aim of improving and protecting the river further. This is an exciting opportunity to join our team, to both continue established projects and programmes and develop the ambitious and innovative work set out in our 2024-9 Strategy

A number of constituents have been in touch regarding these signs that have been appearing on the Water of Leith pathway. The signs aren’t approved by the Council and they could be damaging trees. Council Officers are arranging for them to be removed.

They probably shouldn't just be screwed into the trees, but what a great idea for signage! The condition of the path is really antisocial sometimes, kids tracking manure into the house or getting it all over their clothes? No thanks...

Could it be arranged for the same council officers to remove the horse sh1t?

I would say the path is also being slightly degraded by the horses hooves.
