The Active Travel Transformation Fund will provide £20 million directly to Local Authorities, Regional Transport Partnerships and National Park Authorities – working in partnership with Transport Scotland – to deliver ambitious, construction-ready active travel infrastructure schemes across Scotland.

This should be a great step forward. Investment that cuts out the Sustrans middle man. So why do I still conflicted?

Ah...the biggest single investment is £3.3m towards the work at Picardy Place. Dress it up all you want, but any investment in Picardy Place is investment in driving. You can attempt to prettify it around the edges, install cycle lanes that would confuse Pac Man, plant a few sad trees that the council will forget to water - but the whole scheme is there to facilitate the maximum flow of motorised traffic.

So, a good chunk of our shiny new active travel investment scheme cash is being spent on making it easier to drive into the city centre. Great work guys, great work...

    Mmm

No idea how the ‘cycle infrastructure’ will work there or whether it will make the roads ‘better’ for driving, but I had assumed current, constant, traffic jam was due to it all ‘not being finished’.

    Now less sure that’s true.

    And from tomorrow -
