By all accounts, it's not exactly Copenhagen over there. Back in the summer, "Bud B" posted a bit of a rant, on a fishing forum of all places, about his perceived standards of driving and the very real animosity shown towards cyclists. Can you imagine cyclists (as 'road users', not individuals) being banned from riding through some towns, and going to jail for riding on the road?
The trouble is, this stuff is actually happening. You could argue that with no small road, pedestrian and cyclist friendly infrastructure, only multi-lane highways, human power is on its back foot whatever we try to do; and for people, who are left with no other option, having the temerity to try to protect themselves by using visibility strategies like adopting primary position, a backlash would be inevitable. It never fails to amaze me that a human being could be so callous as to consider ten seconds of their own time as more valuable than the safety -- and perhaps the very life -- of another human being.
(Edit: I thought about putting this in Debate, but it's being debated at great length elsewhere on t'internet).
