Good idea... too much stuff being wasted. Try to repair household stuff as much as possible - makes economic sense.

On that point, LB, where can I have a computer monitor repaired? It's one of the honking big 21" CRTs with either a Trinitron or Diamondtron screen, and I think the voltage dividers are on their way out.

Which leads to the philosophical question - how do you get the balance right between keeping something 'old' going and moving to something 'more efficient'.
This is particularly a problem with computing. Even if the hardware works the software tends to 'outgrow' it.
With bikes there are less extreme issues with frame materials and number of gears.
Hub gears used to be regarded as inefficient - not so much in terms of energy transfer. The comparison was between hubs with internal mysteries and new, clean, derailleur systems.
The 'inefficiency' was more about lack of choice - of gear range.
Now there are hubs with many more gears and ranges that are suitable for many people's daily needs.
Derailleur systems keep adding gears but not increasing the overall range. The efficiency of being able to pedal exactly the 'right' gear is 'balanced' by greater complicity and thinner cogs and chains which tend to wear out quicker.

...and can I mention Remade in Musselburgh North High Street which is a cool little shop selling art, crafts and furniture made from recycled materials by local designers.

That's the realm of Total Cost of Ownership and lifecycle emissions. I've already measured the power that the monitor draws, and it's a frightful amount compared with a similarly sized LCD. But for looking at Stuff, my eyes and my head always preferred a CRT, in much the same way that my keyboard at home is an old mechanical keyswitched Apple Extended that feels just right for typing on. Sorry, that's getting a bit off-topic. I generally repair and reuse something until I can't stands no more.
