I was leaving early today because of the wind and found the battery missing from my bike (it's a Swytch conversion). I went back to my office, thinking maybe I had taken it up, but I hadn't.

On my second time into the store, a guy dressed in black, with helmet, backpack and pushing a black Trek followed me in. Realised he wasn't behaving normally and chucked him out. Should have left him there, as security turned up shortly after thanks to uni staff alerting them.

No harm to me other than some verbal abuse. Question is, do I shell out £300 to replace the battery?

That's grim, sorry to hear this. As for a new battery, I suppose if you want to keep using the electric motor then you will just have to bite the bullet and buy one.

Do you have insurance that would cover this - possibly even home contents insurance? Even if you do, it is probably worth looking into the effect that a claim may have on your no-claims bonus and any excess you might have to pay.

It's not actually clear how easy it will be to buy a replacement battery. Can probably get a used one on eBay. there is also a firm that upgrades (but I think you have to have your existing battery case?).

Swytch has changed their battery design and I;m not impressed by the new ones (lighter but limited range).

Might just bite the bullet and get an e-bike.

While I absolutely understand the n+1 thinking, it might first be worth contacting Swytch, explaining that your battery was nicked and asking whether they have an old style battery they would be willing to sell you first.
