I spent a lot of time looking at that frame ahead of my Ti build up, but opportunistic sales dragged me toward the mtb end with a Titus Silk Road instead.

Went for 1X mtb group set, but with a larger chain ring than you'd see for mtb use. So, ended up with 42T on the front, 9-52T on the back - good range and good speed on the road. But have seen been pulled into the mountain, so it's 36T now.

I do like the Vittoria Terreno Dry 700x47 tyres I have on the "smaller" wheelset. I think they're just a little too big for the Croix de Fer, but the 40s will fit.

@wangi Thanks, I couldn't remember how to put links in.
    Also for the advice :-)

The 42T to 9-52T sounds great, which group set is that?

Ethirteen do 9-50 and 9-52 cassettes which work with both SRAM and Shimano 12 speed setups. Need an XD hub though. I'm using a SRAM GX Eagle AXS. And shop around, can easy pickup the cassette for half current price on ethirteen's website.

I've been really pleased with wheelsets from justridingalong.com

My hardtail only has an 11t smallest cog but even so it gets absolutely savaged by chain wear (I can't go for a bigger chainring as I need the climbing gear at the other end) so for me at least, there's no way I'd go for a 10t or 9t cassette. YMMV

I used to run a 53/34 with 11-32 on the recumbent before we had kids, but when I got back into it recently it was impossibly hard to climb and I fitted a Spa super compact. You can ride, for example, a 44/28 which gives a useable top end and climbing gear with a more traditional cassette.

I have been thinking about an AXS upgrade on one of the ebikes just to test the water. They are both 1x 10 speed right now.

Interesting post. My better half still rides on a steel CdF from 2009 or so and it's really solid. Meanwhile I tracked down an old Pearson Touche frame which I'm glacially rebuilding into my old fixed commuter!

I have been looking at a 12-Speed Mechanical Single 1x Groupset, the idea of a 40t to 10-51t cassette has a certain appeal (apart from the price).
