An extremely long thread on visiting Paris by me: someone interested in cycle infrastructure and making public spaces better.
The last decade’s change is so positive and has been huge: what have they done and how have they done it?

CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 16years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.
RULES No personal insults. No swearing.

Around 1,000km of cycle lanes have been introduced since Socialist Hidalgo took over Paris City Hall in 2014.
The changes mean nearly half of Parisians now ride a bicycle at least once a week, according to cyclists' group Paris en Selle ("Paris in the saddle").

I was there 15 months ago and hired a velib one morning in the SE of the city. It was a great experience with segregated cycleways, a cycle friendly traffic light system, a high level Greenway, cycle only tunnels and no obvious cases of cycle paths ending by dumping you out onto a busy road. It was easy to find bikes, the app was great and included current availability. If you bring bikes to the top of Montmartre, you even get a discount...
Spoke at length with a friend who lived there and she went everywhere by bike, including holidays. She followed a canal network about 7-8 km to work and back year round. I saw a lot of her route very cobbly, so not perfect in cold and wet, but so much better than anything we have. I think Sundays the centre is car free which encourages more leisure use and allows people, especially families with kids, to build confidence.
A definite thumbs up from me.
This article in the same site is interesting as well.
Paris pedals past Amsterdam in race for child-friendly streets
Interesting that Copenhagen is so low. I was there last month, hired a bike as well and cycled outside the city. There was 4-5 inches of snow on the he ground, but every cycle path was clear, dry and ice free, same for at least one footpath on each side of the street. The facilities I saw were still the stuff of dreams over here...
Both front runners are not really disagreeing on the improvements brought about by Hidalgo. The socialist [her assitant] is agreeing with the right winger they all happened at the same time so were disruptive - so need to be better planned in future [tho actually I feel Hidalgo went for maximum disruption to get this done - a brave Mayor she was.] The right winger cant really argue about the improvement as it is palpable. So is banging on about the character of paris changing which is one click from Farage. As he cant long for traffic jams and congestion surely? The further right person is arguing for the poor stuck in the projects and wants the lanes ripped out so the poor can drive into central paris. Rather than improving transport links in the suburbs.
My recent trip to Paisley [home of Coates Thread and Robert Tannahill the unlucky poet] was along the excellent Glasgow superhighways that take you to south side places such as The Burrell Collection, without mixing with cars so really brilliant. But all of the arguments above are trotted out by nutter journo KMcK in The Herald. He even tried to link the fire to the cycle lanes What a walloper.
No doubt Hidalgo left a lasting mark and improvement and agreed the big bang approach was what was needed. Great she had the mandate and guts to go for it.
Not tried the Glasgow South superhighway, but did the canal to Loch Lomond route, which was lovely. Trouble with that was it more or less fell in a heap trying to make a circular route back to Glasgow with 10 miles + on the A81 no fun at all...
