Aware of a problem with publishing today's issue, where our email provider is forcing you to subscribe before reading on web. The visibility settings are broken (software glitch) and we can't do anything about it until their support in the Americas wake up and read our grumpy email.

On the other hand, a massive influx of new subscribers thanks to this bug and a timely link from the Edinburgh Minute, so every cloud...

In inboxes as usual, and web link is https://buttondown.com/edi.bike/archive/edibike-issue-96-9th-june-25/

    @ bakky

I’m not alone in appreciating your effort in researching/producing these.

Especially as you add useful comments/contexts.

    It's an amazing update.

For some reason, I hadn't been getting these by email, largely been clicking on the link here. I had though that I was maybe putting them in spam or rejecting emailsfor some reason. But had enough time for some troubleshooting and could see no sign of the mail coming in!

    Have resubscribed!

    Thanks both :)

@chrisfl - Buttondown are quite aggressive with 'cleaning' the list of subscribers. This keeps it nice and active but I have had more than one person discover they're no longer subscribed... Not happening at scale, but there's clearly a bug somewhere.

As we know, software is built by humans, and as such is inherently very flawed and self-conscious!

The link above has now been fixed by the computing tinkerers, though they have yet to describe what they messed up other than referring to the issue as an ‘edge case’.

Between the subscription wall, a link from a post about ETRO expiry on the Edinburgh subreddit, and a link from the Edinburgh Minute, gained quite a lot of new email subscribers today due to the bug… will be interesting to see if they have a lower retention rate having been essentially arm twisted into it in order to read / view.

    “our hundredth issue“

    CONGRATULATIONS

    Appreciated

    That photo

Shows too much space for motors (and they are not even using it…)

Thank you! And yes, absolutely - clearly nobody’s using it so we should probably get rid ;)

    Another great issue, thanks.

Network Rail as usual aren't covering themselves with glory making statements like their one on the South Gyle bridge. The bridge is the only access between platforms so any works would need to maintain pedestrian access. If the temporary replacement requires bike riders or any ability to dismount then it's apparent that they are lying when they say

"We understand the importance of this route for cyclists and are developing proposals for a temporary bridge to maintain access throughout the work."

They are clearly not developing any proposals to maintain cycling access during the work but instead accepting that they are unable to ban bikes from the station.

Thanks! The quote comes from an official Network Rail statement, which Robbie (who does the route and road closures section weekly) passed on. It includes, under 'notes to editors':

Cyclists would be asked to dismount while using a temporary bridge.

Dismount and accessibility issues aside, Robbie noted:

Temporary bridge probably with stairs in the Gyle later this year, examples here: https://www.mitchellbridges.com/pedestrian-bridges

Network rail have included a temporary active travel bridge at Bawbee bridge in Leven recently, but there were no ramps required. Probably a wheelramp is the best that could be hoped for? Likely affects Gylemuir Primary School too.

Once I finished giggling at 'Bawbee', it was interesting to see NR do have prior form regarding temporary bridges, which sounded rather expensive at first look.
