"Join a family-friendly protest at the continued failure of Buccleuch Estates to provide access to walkers, wheelers and cyclists from their Old Craighall and Smeaton gates.

Meet at the Old Craighall gate (what3 words: calm.fonts.valid; OSM link) at 12 noon on Sunday 13th October. Bring a picnic and warm clothes!

    All welcome."

    Organised by Cllr Shona McIntosh

Liz Robertson who runs EEC has been the farm tenant for many decades. That might make it harder for the estate. Like you say though still no reason. I believe all these smaller access infringements add to a bigger picture of an eroding access law not being enforced.

Span round there (probably nearer 1.30pm than 12pm due to family obligations) but no sign. Still, a lovely day for a spin through the Duke's Estate on the gravel bike even if I did almost get clotheslined

We left around 12:50, headed into the estate and home via The Esk. They had opened the gate, presumably in an attempt to defuse the protest, and there was almost no traffic on the using that road - normally there's a car in or out every 5/10 minutes.

We were approached by a woman on horseback who was also a keen cyclist. She had a chat with Shona - basis of the message seemed to be that she symathised, but we can all just bu**er off as we don't know how to behave in the outdoors.

Restoration Yard area was hoaching, some pumpkin related shenanigans. Cars everywhere. They have no problem with access if you pay.

...don't know how to behave in the outdoors...
    Meaning what? Don't ride horses?

Meaning we don't know which direction to pass the port presumably? On a similar note I only just learned that the 'bird dog' Yoga pose is so named as it refers to a hunting dog pointing in the direction of a bird (not because it looks like a combination of a bird and a dog)

She said: "Complaints about the locked gate at the Old Craighall entrance to the park have been going on for many, many years. To add insult to injury, while ignoring legal requests from East Lothian Council to restore access, someone has recently added mesh to both sides of the gate.

"The only possible purpose of this is to make it harder for walkers to exercise their right of responsible outdoor access."
