Scottish Canals is delighted to announce that towpath improvement works are set to get underway from Leamington Lift Bridge to the boundary of Edinburgh Quay.

The project, which is backed by £605,000 funding from Scottish Government and developed and delivered through partnership between Scottish Canals and Sustrans, will improve the experience of active travel and leisure users along the canal towpath.

[don't understand why the developers of that stretch aren't contributing?]

The project will begin on Monday 2nd December 2024 and are expected to be complete by May 2025.

The works will see this section of the towpath paving upgraded, along with the addition of street lighting, and follow on from previously completed paving upgrades at Lochrin Basin and Boroughmuir High School.

Let's hope the 'snagging' lorries that will inevitably drive all over it, to fix up those new-build flats, don't trash it as soon as it's done.

Like they have done on the other side at Canal Walk / West Tollcross

Needs fixed. Detour not too arduous though THere is also a building site on the Bruntsfield side. Which has only =just stopped being a building site. Anyway will hopefully be good

At some point I feel like I saw a plan where you'd be able to turn a bit left (but not hard left) at the lift bridge and end up closer to opposite Grove st, through a new street in that development

I encountered an articulated lorry parked on the canal towpath by the lifting bridge yesterday morning, which was a new one. Based on what I spotted on my return that evening, it was there to deliver at least one temporary office for the work going on at the basin. I can't help but think that there could have been a better location for this. Watch out for the bumpy raised cable duct things running across the path!

Hah, there is about to be outrage as the cable going to the workies’ hut has the bumpy cover and a Cyclists Dismount sign which is taking the total piss

I have completely failed to spot the sign!

Went this way last night. Site compound has been set up to the right of the Leamington Lift Bridge (looking south - towards Gilmore Place) on the gravel section of the towpath.

The cobbled section of towpath is now shut, although this is not obvious from the road and I only saw a sign when I cycled up past to old Aqua/Cargo building.

Probably best to avoid the whole lot, and just start/finish canal trips near Fountainpark.

It's evident that they are only fixing the surface in front of the flats, and not the last 50m down past bike trax... Sigh!

I wondered about that too. do you think someone else owns that bit?

If the work is related to the new flats (it seems very specific to the area in front of them), then why aren't they contributing?

The last 50 meters isn’t so bad. There is the drain I like to cycle on as smoother than the setts

Ha - I always cycle up that drainage gutter as well. Not idea though as it is only one bike wide and often full of pedestrians.
