    Following success with the Hive Mind on gettin g to a remote industrial estate outside Loanhead [turned out a cycle lane went right by it for my return into Edinburgh had that been needed].

    I now approach the Borg to seek a route from Balerno to the new primary school with no. Parking. Everyone is walking or tram or bus or of course just parking in a local person’s favoured spot. Cycling might even have a segreattted path from the photo and the school has tons of bike racks and showers.

    From Gembo Towers I wold cycle to Heriot Watt then along Canal to Cultins Rd and under the railway at Edinburgh park through Premier Inn at Edinburgh park. I say that to give it as a starting point

    However from there many obstacles exist. Very busy roads, an airport and another train line

    Any ideas?

    I could also go via Ratho/Ratho Station and along the Ingilston path. Which always strikes me as exceedingly unpleasant hence my appeal for a South Gyle passage. I see more blue cycle route signs around there these days but they never seem to work for me on the ground.

    Open to suggestions

    I thought “new primary school with no. Parking” was at Burdiehouse.

    Don’t tell me CEC has built another school without considering key routes from the wilder parts of Ed?

    Not a part of the world I've been in for a while, but I'd probably be sticking quite close to this route: https://www.openstreetmap.org/directions?engine=fossgis_osrm_bike&route=55.92850%2C-3.30813%3B55.94391%2C-3.32160#map=18/55.936483/-3.315918

    There's also an underpass to allow you to avoid the South Gyle Broadway roundabout.

    I think the key bit is to use the underpass at Edinburgh Gateway, as any other nearby crossing of the A8 is infinitely grimmer. Although the underpass wasn't built the last time I cycled there, so there may be underpass trolls I'm not aware of.

    Gembo is referring to Maybury Primary which opened this week.

    Gogar Station Road would likely be my route of choice between the two. Going up and over the RBS bridge northbound.

    Alternatively if you do want to come via The Gyle then I would normally use Lochside Avenue. Either via the premier Inn or over the private bridge behind the donot purveyors. Look for shared pavements and paths once you get closer to The Gyle and enter the car park by the tram stop. You then head for the corner by the tram station where there is a tunnel under the A8.

    One day there will be a bridge over the railway by the station but that's a discussion on another thread.

    From Balerno, Gogar Station Rd, then the wee culvert under the bypass, then follwing Frenchy's route:

    @ Neddie - i do sometimes use Gogarburn Station Rd and the off road track round to Krispy Kreme land. I was also walking through the bizarre bit of the Gyle industrial estate to find the bakery in the middle of nowhere Patina [though it has its own tram stop] and is very good. I have never tried to cross the railway on the bridge out of the Gyle.

    I may have t leave a bit of time or go on a practice. Via Patina again such a nice bakery though their posh restaurant in middle of nowhere doesn’t seem to open at weekend much. It is maybe for the businesses around? There is also a most curious Padel court in the middle of nowhere. Once all the signs about housing turn into housing it might be different. Also fair bit of sculpture and a neon sign installation above a door that states Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of riding a bike. Curious as autogeddon down that way

    @acsimpson Correct.

    @Frenchy - ta

    My route down through Heriot Watt and canal to Cultins is not dissimilar tot he Gogarburn Statin one - so will be mood dependant

    I'd use @neddie's route with a slight tweak to leave Lochside Ave via Lochside View and take the well worn off road route down this bank

    You have several options to cross / go round the Gyle carpark / tram stop depending on mood.

    I didnt fancy @ Neddie’s Roundabout so always good to get options. There is a crossing i think from my days working at The Gyle

    I think HWU and Gogar Station Road would be my choice too. GSR all the way to the RBS spiral bridge and then follow the A8 shared footway past the tram depot and onwards to Turnhouse Road.

    If I had already smashed my way down Riccarton Mains Road like I used to do in my uni days, then I'd take the A71 and then Cultins and Lochside Crescent, whizz over the South Gyle Broadway roundabout, and head through the car park for the Edinburgh Gateway tunnel.
