Pootling back home yesterday, past the new Canaan Lane planters, got me thinking "Is any new cycle infrastructure being built in Edinburgh just now?" Now that CCWEL and Roseburn - almost canal are finished, I can't think of anything. Is this the first time in years that nothing is being built?

If so, it is a real low point and a an indictment of Scott Arthur and Cllr Jenkinson, who have been happy to take the credit for schemes started by the two Lesleys without doing anything themselves.

    Have I missed something?

I don't think there's anything beyond minor junction improvements being done at the moment. Certainly no significant lengths of protected cycle lanes are currently being built.

In the near future...the December 2024 update of the Active Travel Programme says that:

    • The West Edinburgh Link project should begin construction in May 2025. This has been pared down from the original plans, I think now only going as far north as Gogarloch, instead of East Craigs.

    • Cameron Toll-BioQuarter should begin construction in July 2025.

It's very possible that timescales on both of those have slipped since December as well.

Yes, somehow forgot about that despite cycling past it last week.

As it happens, as part of shifting the waffle I write about consultations out of the weekly digest email and onto the website, I've been mooting the following headings to organise them under when linking:

    - Open Consultations
    - Recently Closed
    - Scheduled for Build
    - Under Construction

This at the moment isn't finalised - probably wants a 'Recently Opened' list that can look forward to one new entry every three years, and also is maybe a bit consultation-centric when stuff like Meadows to Union Canal has moved on to just being a 'Project'. But all that is to say, I'll eventually have a page / section in the digest with a veritable 'here's what's currently being built' subheading somewhere in there.

...it's also fun (and depressing) to contrast this with the frequent video updates by Charles McGibbon about everything Glasgow is building right now.

Thanks all, completely forgot about the Leith path. I still think the pace of projects in Edinburgh is slower than ever - also, the forthcoming projects seem to have been chosen for their lack of impact on drivers, rather than the needs of cyclists.

West Craigs has lots of new shared use paths to Maybury School and play parks.
Still no direct link to Gateway Station and tramway.
68 bus runs on Turnhouse Road but not frequently.
Then we wonder why there are so many cars!
Bridge over railway must be imminent?

It further said that funding and staffing resources, as well as some of the bureaucracy involved in building new infrastructure, was to blame.
