Covered racks are being installed between the cash machines and the coffee stand.

    Sorry for poor quality photo.

    New bike racks

Hopefully there will be lots of racks, enough to cope with both the projected increase in Haymarket passenger numbers and percentage share of cycling numbers in Edinburgh in general.

    "Sorry for poor quality photo."

    Took liberty of lightening it.

    Looks promising -

Excellent. Glad to see something useful. Covered too. Looks like they will be hung vertical to save ground space.

There was a Sheffield stand sitting against the wall (you can see it in the photo, towards the left) so I got the impression that it would be a fairly conventional bike rack apart from the snazzy roof (which may not provide exceptional cover, it must be said).

I was in a bit of a hurry last night so didn't get much of a look (and I didn't even notice it in the morning! Surely they didn't build all that in one day!)

The biggest challenge will be at busy times trying to get your bike in or out past the continuous stream of commuters.

Hopefully we'll start seeing more of this kind of stuff appearing.

@kaputnik - that's a good point, but after a few handlebars in the ribs and tyre tracks on the trousers they might get the hint ;)

I don't know why they didn't place racks under the tram line in the old carpark? Its covered and perfect, out of the way, semi private, and would only take up one or two places!
If you head down to the northern most platform and look out of the double glass doors (which are locked to all but the disabled) you can planely see the new concerite structure with spaces underneath which could very easily be used to create covered cycle parking.

Back on the train this morning, first time in several months.

This is the first time I have ever seen the new bike racks full* - and I was earlier than usual (just before 8am) as I had to buy a ticket.

My bike is now on the 'old' racks outside Ryries.

Please Scotrail, or is it Network Rail, can we have some more racks please?

*There were actually only 23 bikes attached to the 12 racks, but the end space was taken up by a woman sitting having a coffee at the cafe.

those racks have been full most of the times I have passed/popped into Starbucks
i wonder if getting more of those donut type mounts on any available poles, is an option

If someone installed an official parking facility on the poles round there they might get complained at by people* concerned with the interactions between pole-fastened cycles (which could still flop sideways, even if attached to doughnuts) with the short-lived but highly-charged pedestrian fluxes.

*I assume some more of these exist, even if they've not been able to effect any consideration for the volumes of pedestrians needing to move amongst the roadworks to date.

Hi cb - I hope you have asked ScotRail, Network Rail and your MSP - not just members of this forum! (we don't have many decision-making powers unfortunately!!)

Unfortunately, rather than more spaces being provided, the future is very unclear. For a lengthy temporary period it looks like there may be *less* spaces, maybe none, or the same spaces in a less convenient location. For the longer term future the position is totally unclear and could be a lot worse than now - or better. Anyone concerned about this can do their bit.

Spokes recently leafletted all bikes parked at Haymarket (including Ryrie's) with members' newsletter Spokesworker 21.2.12 which covers this and several other bike/rail issues.

    That's not "advertising" that's useful/helpful info!
