Further closures of the Innocent Railway are planned for cliff descaling works to reopen Duddingston Low Road. I challenged HES on why such a fence has not been installed on the Innocent Railway to keep it open during works. They stated that it was possible but the cost is too high (a figure of 25k was suggested). It was agreed to investigate improving upcoming closures of the Innocent Railway, such as providing more notice, a signed diversion route and keeping it outside of commuter periods.

The potentially positive bit of the article is that Duddingston Low Road might reopen for bikes and pedestrians only

Yes, everything is “too expensive” when it comes to bikes. Or we need another report. Or we need to delay to “check something”

Meanwhile infinite money to spend on traffic-inducing, children’s-future-trashing roads in Midlothian

We’ll know we’ll have a chance of survival on this planet when they propose new bus/tram/cycle routes only, in Midlothian and elsewhere, and leave cars out of the mix entirely

£25K is a rounding error in the transport budget surely? Also couldn't they use some of the active travel budget towards it ?

@mcairney HES not CEC I am amazed they are saying the low road will become ped and bike only. They love a motor at HES

I am curious about this. I had no sense of the low road as being particularly attractive as a cycling / pedestrian route (I always use either the high road or the Innocent).

BUT, would this not quite effectively reduce most of the use of the park as a rat run?

Obviously some would still use the Queen's Drive as a short cut from Meadowbank to the Commie and parts south. But do some drivers go all the way around?

I used to regularly use the Low Road on the way home (it's a longish gradual downhill so you can often nudge the 30mph mark and over). Going the other way it's a bit of a slog with a punchy steep climb from Duddingston Loch then a gradual uphill pretty much all the way to the roundabout. With traffic it wasn't particularly attractive or enjoyable if I'm honest.

The thing I've found makes the low road unenjoyable has mainly been the traffic, and the potential for someone doing an overtake on the wrong sharp corner - so a welcome change particularly as it's nearly inevitable that it reduces traffic in the park.

Wondering where else we can point at rocks and get traffic-free roads... :)

I can't decide whether to interpret the report on the public meeting as meaning:

    Either
    1) The low road is to be bikes & peds only permanently, with the fence mentioned in the report as mitigation against the risk of further rockfall. (Hmm, not so sure I'd fancy that).
    or
    2) The low road is to be bikes & peds only until the cliff descaling works are completed, with the fence in place as a temporary mitigation until it can be reopened to motor vehicles and bikes & peds can return to using the Innocent path.

With @gembo's cynic's hat on, I'd be inclined towards the latter interpretation, though I'd be much happier should the former one prove correct (mcairney's justified reservations about the westbound gradient notwithstanding).

Works are planned to reduce the extent of the closure of the Radical Road.

Very happy to hear that, even if (which my climber's hat/helmet on) it's only to reinstate access to the South Quarry area. Lovely place for a wee boulder on a summer's evening.
