Secure public cycle parking in Edinburgh yet?

    Hi,

I was in Glasgow last week and saw what looked like secure bike parking, near the Strathclyde Uni campus.

Is there any independent secure cycle parking in Edinburgh yet? Most offices have his but the office I'm visiting has building work going on which has blocked access to their cycle cage. I know I could use a staple outside the building or nearby at Haymarket but I really don't like leaving my bike outside for any length of time, if I can avoid it.

    Thanks, Dave C

Hi Dave - been a long time! I'm not aware of any secure short-term cycle parking in Edinburgh.

Not much help for your current situation, but it seems that cyclehoop, the folk that build the on-street lockers, now offer short term rentals in Glasgow and other places. Hopefully, this will also come to Edinburgh. See:

The big new office block at Haymarket seems to have visible indoor bike parking but private. Good if a facility like that could be made public even at small charge.

Suggest you talk to whoever runs building you’ll be working in.

    Presume has some car parking??

Even if not presume sone ‘storage’?

If you get ‘can’t let you, everyone would want to do it’, I’m sure you’ll have some sort of response ready…

    “or nearby at Haymarket”

I’m fairly confident the horrible top-loader racks would be secure. I’ve left bikes there for a few days. There are also some at ground level that seem to be abandoned.

If still concerned, take front wheel to work.

Haymarket station racks do get targeted by angle grinder wielding bams; best to have a good amount of trust in your lock (or alternatively, the shambolic appearance of your steed) before locking up there.

    During the day?

Unlikely to take bike they can’t ride away.

There are some Waverley racks that are very very public and right under a camera, which I usually choose if I have to leave a bike there for longer than usual.

I've not heard of bikes being stolen from there recently? would be interesting to know if it is an issue.

@SRD yes Waverley would be more secure than some perhaps - being sort of indoors and on cctv.

Haymarket another matter. A certain bike shop person had their bike stolen from station racks. Was only two weeks old. Upright Airnimal folder - frame sourced from LB built as single speed design.
The racks beside Ryries maybe slightly safer though top deck of station ones would be hassle to rob from.

Thank you all. I'm getting the train in Monday to get my office pass and will speak to the building staff to see about cycle parking. I'm getting the train to Edinburgh this morning and will have a good look at the cycle parking and camera positions in Haymarket as I pass through.

Cyclehoop have this as a revenue generation detail - not sure how revenue split goes though

A guy from Korea (or Taiwan?) was promoting a system similar to the Homeport units that were used for bike hire in early 2000 (eg Hourbike/OyBike) and adapted from secure home delivery system. An electronic lock released a cable with woven wire sheath (a real problem to cut through with frayed wires everywhere) & tamper alarm circuit triggers if cable cut of messed with)
This locked up bikes and only released with RFID card or PIN to send release code. System called MOSA secured to buildings/bike stands, but not yet offered as integrated data option
I'd like to reprise the Homeport offer based on the systems we have had on bike hire since 2001 where a locking pin/cable is released by signal (PIN/Bluetooth etc) & provides robust and time stamped use with unique electronic signature of each user locking their own bikes
I know the product & basic details (of kit already available) I really could use some help to get this developed as an innovative product?
Basically an electronic code-released lock which remains secured to a building or bike stand, the user arrives and 'hires' the lock using a code unique to their ITSO card or mobile phone. Once hired & locked only the user or the system admin can unlock the bike, and with the electronic tamper alert the bike owner and the system admin are warned when interference takes place
Very simple and being used for public bike hire for nearly 25 years now
Happy to talk to media about cycle parking & security with my 1997 report fro DETR plus work going back earlier that this
