Having gotten all my utility routes nailed down I'm starting to think about striking out from my new place in Broxburn for leisure rides but unfortunately keep running into the West Lothian Deadzone, ie basically everything between Broxburn and Linlithgow west of Kirkliston. It'd be nice to pop over to Linlithgow for an afternoon or down to Bo'ness, but there don't seem to be any coherent connections in the region at all even if you count crummy narrow footpaths, your choices are to head over to Dechmont and take Burnhouse/Manse Roads which are unlit national speed limit, or go up the B8406 which has a big section with no pavement right at the point it turns into a 50mph winding uphill gradient. There's the canal towpath, but it's double the distance, half of it in the wrong direction, and turns to even-narrower-than-Edinburgh mucky gravel after Winchburgh by the look of things.

Waiting for the ATAP to be implemented will see me retired or possibly deceased before they get far enough down their to-do list to put in the proposed infrastructure on those routes, so I'm wondering if anyone's ridden either of the on-road routes before. Bearing in mind I'll be tottering along at ~15-16mph on my upright ebike not tanning it on a roadbike, am I better to just write off anything to the north, or is one or the other route tolerable?

Superb cycling north of Broxburn - take the main road north towards Greendydkes Bing Head down towards Winchburgh past the pink jumbo jet nose cone. Turn left before Winchburgh through Faucheldean. At Tar Hill there is a quick right left to continue west to Ochiltree which is at the top of Kingscavil. Keep heading west and you will get to Linlithgow or keep further west and you will be in Beecraigs. The lookout cafe is nice. These are the Bathgate alps and with a Lecky bike they are your new playground. I recommend the Spokes Map of West Lothian if you are in any doubt about avoiding the main roads which as you say, aint cool.If you ever tire of the Alps you can go north of Winchburgh to Abercorn where the lovely grave of Ian Hamnmilton Finlay and his as yet not deceased sister is a quick detour in the f=kirk and then you can take the trail down to the beach at Blackness and on to Bo’ness - this is more off road but have done it gingerly on a road bike so E bike no problem.

I'm pretty sure the canal path is tarred all the way from Broxburn to Glasgow. There are probably some short unpaved sections that I've forgotten about. West of Falkirk there are still a few annoying chicanes.

I have definitely cycled the back road from Dechmont to Linlithgow a few times. It's been a while since I did, but my recollection is that it was very quiet, with no memorably dangerous drivers.

@Frenchy the section @Yodhrin mentions is the muddiest stretch on the whole towpath. It maybe has tar underneath the mud but it is. Muddy. Nearer Linlithgow lot of tree root bumps too. But as @Yodhrin also alludes to the towpath in Broxburn doubles back on itself by maybe 270 degrees. If i am using it. To. Get to Glasgow I. Get on at Niddrie Castle avoiding the Broxburn loop

@gembo Thanks for the suggestions I'll have to force myself to get over the wibblies and give it a go. Hopefully the boy racers stick to tanning it up and down main street and avoid those back routes hah.
