    Hello folks
I am still in the early stages of figuring out some kind of crowd funding
A fellow dad at the high school and group member of the dad group had an accident involving a pedestrian and sadly has been paralysed. After a lot of effort he managed to regain some mobility in his hands but as I have not met with him and hear all this through the dads group who have been to visit him

He was recently discharged from the Spinal Unit in Glasgow and sent home to Edinburgh expected to fend for himself so I want to get something to hopefully help him get

Electric wheelchair like the hospital one
Possibly a recumbent e-bike he can operate with hands only
Other stuff for the home and his daughter to cope

his career as an artist will be difficult but I imagine he will not stop. his own page is here if you want to take a look

    Looking at
    crowd funding
    go fund me
    donorbox
and trying to figure out which would be best and have no fees or "tips" needed to not lose funding to the soulless site owners, any advice greatly appreciated

Intend to spread word to Critical Mass and Pedal On Parliament groups to get started and hopefully go national to see how much of a difference we could make to his life going forward

While I haven't crowdfunded on any of those platforms, I'd look out for those that let you run campaigns where the money changes hands even if the aspired target isn't met (some money better than none!). It would be worth looking through the Crowdspace directory of such platforms and finding one UK-based; I'd expect a smaller platform will have a more beneficial set of terms and fees.

    Thanks that is very useful
WhyDonate looks like a decent option so I will check with the folks that know him better than I do before charging in like a bull at a clipboard shop

This is sad on so many levels.

I knew him when he had a studio at Sculpture Workshop, was always impressed with anything he did.

(Lots of examples on the web)

He then moved to Japan (don’t know how long for).

    A fundraiser seems desirable/necessary.

Obviously you will make sure it’s desired and not duplication.

I'm really sorry to hear this, I hope he's learning to cope with this serious life changing event. Unfortunately it appears to me that people are now discharged from the spinal unit much sooner than they used to be and so rehab is much more difficult and takes a lot longer.
All disability equipment is incredibly expensive so, if possible, it's really useful to try as many different options as you can before taking the plunge and buying any of the.
To this end, when he's ready we've got semi-recumbent handcycles at Saughton Park for people to use including an electric assist one adapted for tetraplegics with elbow braking and gearchanging. I volunteer there with Thistle Outdoors on a Thursday afternoon and we've managed to get 4 people hooked on handcycling who all went on to buy their own and ride off into the sunset.

His situation sounds sad and frustrating on many levels. I have no wisdom to share, but will keep a look out for an opportunity to donate when this becomes possible... That video is extremely satisfying, other than the initial kick having just been missed!

@chdot yes, obviously, that is where I am, obviously, making sure that nobody else is, obviously, doing this to be a duplication

    Wasn’t doubting your (good) intent.

I’m sure you’ll do all right ‘checks’.

Please report back on whatever happens.

(If I sounded ‘over-advising’, it’s because I know of someone in a very similar situation - bike incident, long stay in hospital, life changing - so I’m aware of family trauma, sensitivities etc.)
