I was on a facebook page about Edinburgh. This was Hi-jacked by a Free Driving proponent [in the comments I couldn’t establish whether the chap who said we should be free to drive vehicles up to 4x4 wherever we want- was parodying the original geezer or agreeing]. Anyway the original hijacker says why have the council recently prevented a left turn at the top of Leith Street [they haven’t it has been no left turn for years]. Original hijacker even tries to say a bus dropping off punters for a Playhouse gig should be llowed to turn left here. [Clearly Playhouse and football buses just go down London Road and then on to Regent Road at abbey hill and are then facing the right direction etc]. Then we get to the Original Hijacker’s main point - The Council are deliberately creating congestion to allow them to introduce a congestion charge.

I shall not bore you with the North Berwick page which is now only about having to pay for parking [10am-4pm] - a wedding has been cancelled as the happy couple couldn’t face making their guests pay for parking [This is a clear lie the good people of North Berwick have called out]

Anyway, the solution is to read edi.bike and obey @Bakky and fill. In every Consulltation. Turn out in huge numbers for PoP, come to CanoPY last Friday of the month Keep on Keeping On

I was reading there on a short break from work a quick. Q And A with Jenny Graham in the latest magazine from Cycling UK.

Jenny is very upbeat, if it is raining she cycles, as she live. In the Highlands etc, puts on a jumper etc.

Sadly when asks what the one thing would be to improve cycling she gives a. Very wrong answer. She says the problem is mindset. Us V Them, Roads. Belong to drivers. Now I do not disagree with any of that. However, a fundamental fact of bahviour change is that changing attitudes DOES NOT change behaviour Mindset is not something that is doable and picking it is. A. Bad pick. the one thing that will improve cycling in the UK is INFRASTRUCTURE. The second thing is changing driver insurance to PRESUMED LIABILITY. I am not gonna debate you Jerry. [or Jenny]

    You say free parking
    I say paid parking
Let's call the whole thing off

I saw the same FB thread this morning, full of frothing "Clowncil" free-driving roasters. I didn't have the patience to let myself get annoyed and to start correcting points of view and just closed the site and looked at something more wholesome.

Deleting the Facebook app off my phone and trying to avoid it as much as possible has been a significant improvement in terms of wellbeing.

Still have need of it for various groups, keeping an eye on org news for the digest, and promotional stuff for e.g. PoP; but it's suffering under a similar problem we see at some Community Councils... becoming a demographically under-representative echo-chamber that reenforces the worst of the culture wars stuff.

What's been interesting is seeing other places - for example Reddit's r/edinburgh - become gradually more pro-cycling in terms of the responses to topics there. There may be a similarly narrow demographic window expressing themselves there, however.

These are all very valid points and indeed songs. It is essential to remain cheerful.

Some of these folk on-line are. More reasonable face to face. I am not saying reasonable but More reasonable eg when we did debate the good people of Roseburn. I wonder if the picture framer is still there and paying for his parking now or keeping his eyes peeled for traffic wardens. Amazing how a whole culture war was about one guy not wanting to pay to park his motor outside his shop. See also the generally law abiding citizens of Corstorphine who saw nothing wrong in chopping down a camera but who wouldnt be happy if you flung a brick through their window [they may have gone to North Berwick tho to smash parking meters - that did not end well for Cool Hand Luke]

One of the many reasons i enjoy edi.bike is its jaunty angle.

I saw a most erudite facebook post on Facebook Edinburgh Past and Present page where a very intelligent person has taken the patience to explain the difference between a Consultation and a Referendum.

@gembo: the picture framer is still in business, as is the PC repair shop and the Roseburn Cafe across the road which seems as busy as always. There’s also an excellent coffee shop (Disposition) which opened after all of the nonsense and is regularly packed out.

@Stickman that is astonishing I understood they were going straight out of business and yet the whole area appears to be really benefitting from the cycle path with the existing business not going bust and being added to by new, vibrant coffee roasting but hopefully non-roaster types.

One can only hope that armed with CCWEL as a case study, the inevitable localised furore that comes along with these projects is being taken with a large pinch of statistically-backed salt going forward.

@bakky - sorry to say, but you will still be arguing with people who think cycle lanes are never used, yet pose an almost certain risk of death to pedestrians for many years to come.

@morningsider, alas you are correct, hence me rallying the troops as factual information has a very low currency in Trumponomics post truth world.

@morningsider I think I mean within council teams - i.e being emboldened by successful deliveries and things settling in. Roasters gonna roast

Imagine being a council officer - getting gip from council tax payers [they do usually check that if they can] and elected members [keen to win one vote and sacrifice all principles especially the LIB DEMS]

WHAT SHALL IT PROFIT A MAN TO INHERIT if he shall gain the whole word AND LOSE HIS SOUL, BUT FOR WALES!
