There's a new ScotRail app in town. Had a play around with it this morning and, sadly it looks like a step backwards in it's current form.
The search results no longer show which train have cycle spaces available, and they have also lost the "show earlier/later trains" facility.
There might be a way to add a bike at a later stage, but I haven't been able to do the mandatory password reset yet.

Now I have managed to reset my password I see bike reservations can be added once you have selected your journey and ticket type. Not as good as the old app, but better than the likes of the LNER app that don't offer the feature at all.

Another little nugget of annoyance hidden right at the bottom of the last FAQ question: the new app doesn't save payment information unless you use Apple/Google Pay or Paypal, you have to manually enter your full card details every time you buy a ticket. They are planning to "enhance" this at some unspecified future time.
Great work "improving the customer experience" there lads. I wonder which Scotrail execs' nephew's app company is getting funneled public money for this boondoggle.

National is doing a transport theme today. Links to follow. Even if you're not persuaded on self government, few other publications are going to look at it in any detail.

Consultancies are using models that “consider rail in isolation”, Dennis explained, adding that to create a truly efficient, sustainable and accessible transport network that works for all of Scotland, policymakers need to look beyond individual proposals and passenger estimates.
“Induced demand goes both ways” he explained. Expanding road networks while playing down opportunities for rail revival – often using pessimistic feasibility reports – is, in his view, producing missed opportunities while leading to spiralling expenditure which could have instead been used on infrastructure.

The latest figures from 2023‑24 show total public transport journeys in Scotland (bus, rail, air, ferry) increased by 15% compared with 2022‑23. Driving frequency is edging down with 2024 figures telling us 71% of people aged 17 and older held a full driving licence and 64% drove at least once a week, with 35% driving every day – well below the 43% who drove daily in 2019.
..........Professor Adrian Davis, an expert in transport and health, believes the answer to a fluid and reliable public transport system in Scotland’s cities is creating road space for buses to run on time without being hindered by traffic.
“Who has access to the [road] space? We’ve given it to private cars increasingly,” Davis told The National.
“If you want urban areas to work, it’s not going to work by allowing people to just drive around in private cars and cause more and more congestion and slowing bus services down because it then creates a spiral of more people choosing to use a car because the bus service isn’t good enough.”
The Edinburgh Napier University academic said making space for buses to operate fluidly as part of an integrated ticket system would be his biggest priority in improving Scotland’s public transport, having seen how well other European cities function like this.
He said: “You only have to think about when you go abroad to a European city and it’s just socially normal to get on a bus or take the tram. I often point people to Freiburg which has got one of the most extensive tram systems in Europe.

Meanwhile the ScotRail app still has problems.
SCOTRAIL have confirmed that commuters temporarily cannot buy Smartcard tickets via its website or mobile app, deepening frustration amid ongoing problems with the operator’s new app.
