    Tomorrow, we begin a three-part series with award-winning engineer and regular Inquirer writer Corey Boyle on the future of cycling in Edinburgh.

    As you would expect, Building a Cycling City is deeply-researched and benefits from Corey’s expertise as an active travel specialist. Over the coming weeks, Corey will look at the benefits of cycling investment, what the capital has achieved to date and what it could do next.

    As Corey says, his work is no attack on cars, rather a considered look at how we move around the city region and how we might do that in the decades to come. It will, we hope, help create a more informed and thoughtful discussion about the future of transport in Edinburgh.

    No disrespect to Corey but the city has had more than enough active travel plans/visions/strategies. These include a plan for the city centre produced by Jan Gehl - possibly the world's most famous urbanist. (bit of a niche claim to fame that).

    There is only one thing the city needs to deliver its active travel plans - political leadership. Sadly lacking.

    Also, for active travel, and for public transport, to work in a city, you actually have to reduce car traffic. Whether you would call that an "attack on cars" or not is up to the individual - but do it you must.

    @neddie - absolutely, possibly the ultimate bit of political leadership for a local council. Look at the brickbats Sadiq Khan took for pursuing the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) in London - his own party leader didn't even back him. Now the results are and they are incredibly positive:

    Meanwhile, Edinburgh has just removed the Braid estate filters, despite their proven success in reducing total traffic.

    Workers need their vans. Rural communities often have no alternative. Carers and people with mobility issues should arguably find driving easier than they do. And some people simply love it.

    But be honest. How truly joyous was your driving experience in the past year?

    It’s usually the school run, the supermarket dredge, the parking prowl, the pothole slalom, the soul-sucking slog at Sheriffhall, the cost of living crisis at the pump, and the daily bout of road rage.
