    Hi there folks.
Shall hopefully be getting a wee bit of money through in the coming weeks and I'm thinking of getting the EBC Rev cross as it's cheap, had drop bars and chunky tires.
Just got a Revolution Cullin but it is a bit small for me.
My dream bike is the Croix de Fer and I'd have it if I didn't b off to Uni and miss the cycle to work scheme.

I've seen one or two of them around and they look alright and sat on one in the EBC.

Mind you if a tri cross pops up second hand I'll snap it up!

Just wondering if you think it's worth the money and all that jazz?
    Cheers folks.

I think it you've got that much money to spend on one bike then it will get you a decent all-purpose machine that you could commute on, do some longer distance rides etc. and won't be too much of a slouch around town.

Plain black finish is quite handsome and won't attract too much attention. Dropped bars are good for getting out the wind. Decent range of gears. Looks like it has brazeons in all the right places for rack and guards. Not having cheap suspension is a plus in my book.

At 12 1/4 kilos it won't be the lightest dropped-bar bike out there, but it will be lighter than many "hybrids" in the same price range and my touring bike is 13kg and can still go fast when needs to.

Should be up to the job of not falling apart and you've got the bonus of it being under warranty over a second-hand one that may have seen some unknown abuse.

Put your own choice of colour in bar tape and bottle cages on and jobs a good'un.

There was a second hand croix de fer going for <1k in TBW a couple weeks ago, dunno if its still there. Have a look at the ridgeback tourers, really well equipped for the money and I see a lot of old ones being ridden about as commuter/shopper/tourers, which suggests durability.

What id really say is Shop Around, I kinda went for the first bike i fell for, luckily it wasnt a bad bike (Tricross :) but I think if i was given the choice again I would get something else. (surly or cube most probably)

Ridgeback do 2 tourers - Voyage at £800 and Panorama at £1250. They're great bikes for the money (I happen to have one) and handsomly well appointed. But if you've only got c. £400 to spend and want something new then I still think the EBC offering is a good buy. A friend of mine is after something along the lines of the Voyage and we've been watching classifieds / ebay for a while and nothing is coming up in that department :(

Popped into the EBC for a looksies and sat on both the Cros (52") and Cross Sport (55") and they both felt really good. Once my money is through I'm going to get them to build up a 55" to try out as well.
As ever I am keeping my eye out on gumtree etc but nothing inspiring has popped up.
Tempted by the sport as it's a better spec etc but the Cross really is within my 'student' budget ;)

They felt quite nippy (in the shop) but I can see it taking a ride or two to get used to drop bars.

When I bought a tricross on BTW scheme, I asked about the EBC copy. The staff in EBC steered me to tricross if I had the money. If you don't have BTW (which you don't) seems an OK option. It is heavier, poorer spec and tyres too chunky but you can change them come the summer, then you will notice how much faster you are going then you will become a roadie. Simples

I ride an EBC Revolution Cross and really like it. Did the Glasgow to Edinburgh ride in September on it no problems and find it good for getting about town. Worth the money in my opinion.

SWMBO got a Croix de Fer through Cyclescheme last year. It's a cracking bike - almost exactly what I'd have if I was going to buy an upright "one bike to rule them all".

I've not ridden a Revolution Cross but if it's in any way similar, it will be excellent.

Make sure you get the right size this time! ;-)

A shiny new steel XdF has appeared in the bike racks at work. It has replaced the 3 grand carbon and aerospokes team Lampre Wilier. I have forgiven the owner as he explained he's just moved up here and hadn't sorted himself out with a bike that's more suited to our roads and elements.

The croix de fer is my dream steed and one that I shall get someday.
They were just getting the C2W scheme started before I decided to elope to uni.
    It'll come.. in time

Well we were mostly engaged in "roadiechat", sizing eachother up by the relative merits of our summer rides... Maybe I'll stick a paper QR code on to his frame
