Where does one go to get wheels built in Edinburgh? Please don't say Alistair Gow, it needs to be someone I can get to. ;-)

I got mine gone at the Bicycle Works, or you could go on a wheel building course at the Bike Coop...

Good question, actually. I'm guessing the places to try would be The Bicycleworks, Edinburgh Bicycle and Alpine Bikes, probably in that order. Anyone else?
I'm guessing mainly because I'm writing this with my USE wheel truing stand sitting next to me. If you can, get hold of a copy of Jobst Brandt's 'The Bicycle Wheel', it tells you just about everything you need to know about the subject. Gerd Schraner's 'Art of Wheelbuilding' is also worth looking at, though personally I prefer Brandt's straight-talking manner.
Don't forget about Uncle Sheldon's page on wheelbuilding, too. That's about as good an online reference as you'll find.

Bicycle works did me a nice tight wheel last time i needed one they are quite reasonable also.

I've used three sets of wheels built by the Bicycleworks in the last ten years. Highly recommended.

Maybe try this guy, as recommended on the Velocast this week:

Also, haven't been there for years but Bain's Bikes in Newhaven do a good wheel at a good price. Never did figure out their opening hours mind you.
If I'd built more than three wheels in my entire life I'd offer to do it it for you... :-)

I would go to Bicycle Works, I haven't had wheels from them but they are my first stop for all sorts of work and have never let me down (at very reasonable prices, too!)
Last week I had the rear disc mount of my lowracer reamed, faced, other bits of paint filed away and a good dollop of useful tips when I picked it up - all for £8.
I've never been so keen on the Bike Co-op since they tried to charge me £40 to replace a 6 month old failed fork on one of their own brand bikes - Bicycle Works sorted me out for half that.

Bain's Bikes...that takes me back. Is it run by the same guy who was Claymore Cycles? I remember he looked like Pat Metheny.

Last time I was there, it still said Claymore Cyles on the window. I still see Pat Metheny oops I mean the Claymore guy pedalling around Embra.
Claymore was taken over by a guy called Neil (Bain, presumably) who had a ginger ponytail IIRC. Goodness knows whether he's still there (Newhaven Village) but he did good wheels at very good prices...

Actually if you can get Neil, he is an excellent wheel builder and general repair dude. Practically refurbed my off road for half what even the bicycle works wanted and won't do any work that isn't necessary. Good guy, fairly eccentric but good guy.

Brilliant, thanks for the suggestions everyone, much appreciated. Will try Bicycle Works, is a bit handier for me anyway. :-)

Had my rear wheel rebuilt at Bain's Bikes in Newhaven. Rim had started to split so had hub overhauled and new spokes and rim built up. Very pleased with the work done and very reasonably priced - given other bike shops are quoting £40 labour for a rebuild.
Neil Bain seems a very straight guy. Appears to be the place to go for a service as well.
The shop is the antithesis of the shiny bike shop - it's easy to assume it's been closed for years on the outside. But look out for the old Claymore Cycles sign in the window in Newhaven Main Street. He seems to open Tues - Sat evenings. Not the quickest but worth the effort.Posted 13 years ago # -
So it is still open. Wow, it's the least open looking shop in the world.
