  1. Never thought I'd see the day, but found myself checking out discarded bricks by the Water of Leith on a lunchtime wander today...

Dougal's Winchburgh brickworks - not to be confused with Dougall's of Bonnyside.

The other one is intriguing. Does it end -"OEM" or -"OF M"?

  4. I'm pretty certain it's an 'E'... Looked older, being frogless (see, I'm getting the lingo already!).

Min, you're probably safe, not sure I've seen any old bricks along the Innocent.

    Yet.

It's a G. GEM. And it's all the way from Coed Talon in Wales. Gem Brick, Tile & Terra Cotta Works became Alyn Brick, Tile & Terracotta in 1901 - so it's at least older than that. Latter closed in 1916 and site was converted to a works producing silica to go into Vim as a scouring agent.

You see. Bricks are fascinating history lessons at your feet!

I can feel a 'Bring a Brick' party coming on...

    rtc Bricks are heavy
Once you become a brickophile you'll realise that (just like bikes) some are lighter than others... that's half the fascination...

    What's the other half....? errrr

Drain covers we cycle over often from the Carron Iron Works

The girders in our old building in McDonald Road from Glengarnock Steel Works (where my grandfather did double shifts)

I dug a Portobello pot intact out of the bottom of my garden

Stephen Poliakoff could make a drama out of this.

Chdot's more of a Willaim Arrol man himself judging by his photostream

Couldn't quite decide which thread to put this on, but did anyone else notice the bricks in this week's Time Team?
