As keenly anticipated, something's happening to the ropey muddy pooey section of the Hawkhill-Seafield section of the old railway path...

...which will give me an alternative commute and also allow easy access to popular tourist attractions

from both Easter Road and Seafield.

This is getting almost as intruiging as that trick Nicky Campbell used to pull, guessing his radio callers' star-signs. Is there any brick you can't identify?

Yes. Arrelcat found one out by Seton way. It needs a return visit. Also unsure about the heritage of "Dewar" bricks...

    Whitehill? :)

Whitehill Colliery Brick & Fireclay Works, at Rosewell in Midlothian. Probably early 1900s when that particular rail line was built.

The red dust has now been there for over a week with little sign of change. They've missed the four weeks the notice on the barrier optimistically suggested but will hopefully get it finished within the original estimate of six.

Hmm. Still just mud between Seafield St and Leith Links, then?
I'll try and remember to slow down and glance at the Restalrig Road access-slope on my way past to see if it's been done as that's usually the worst bit for dogturds.

"Still just mud between Seafield St and Leith Links, then?"

Didn't go that way, but assume it hasn't been touched yet(?) EDIT the plan here doesn't include the branch to Leith Links. Don't know if/when it's planned.

"I'll try and remember to slow down and glance at the Restalrig Road access-slope on my way past to see if it's been done"

    Didn't notice.

Is this one new, or improved?

Whoah. If that's the Findlay Gardens access, it too was previously just mud. That suggests they will get round to the other (much more popular) access-slope, though it was untouched twenty minutes ago.

There has been minor progress since I was last here. Everything behind shot to Leith Links is still overgrown and muddy whindust.

Does this just join up with previously tarmaced path or is there a new link to road at (former) Eastern General?

it just joins with previous recent tarmacation. They have tarmaced the arm of the triangle here off to the left as if it is going to go all the way to former EG at some point.

Must be still resolving land ownership issues.

Hah. I wandered along that filming various bits of it this morning but haven't got round to stitching them together or uploading them. There was a chunk of tarmac flung into a bramble patch at the pathside a bit further round. Also worrying is that no attempt has been made to fix the ulcerated slope up to Findlay Whatever.

Good that they have done the Leith Links access at least since I was last there. The Restalrig Road access was/is, as you describe, a rather steep dog toilet: best avoided.
Pity about the "challenge steps" at Seafield: no sign of anything happening, I suppose?

ACtually it did look like there was some work going on at access to Restalrig Crescent / Finlay Gardens. A lot of mud thoughtfully deposited on the surface by the workmen's diggers and some fencing helpfully placed across most of the path, with just enough room to squeeze by one at a time.

The guerilla-action slope to Seafield Street has had a bit of trimming but it's still just a mudslope. The official steps at the Eastern General bridge-gone bit are still missing a few risers, as are the Restalrig Road (east footway) steps the other side from the pooslope.

    LIVE UPDATE!

The bit at the bottom of the steps from Lochend Road has just been (partially) tarmacadamed and steamrollered, as has a tiny rectangle of marshland at the bottom of the steps down from Restalrig Road. There were some men there so I was unable to take a picture or check if they'd replaced the four missing risers on these already-steep steps. I shall inspect this the next time it rains as by the time I'd gone to Easter Road B&Q and back they'd driven from Lochend Road to Restalrig Road and laid the repair.

The abysmal poo-slope down from the other side of Restalrig Road is untouched.

Whilst not yet repaired, the Findlay Gardens access-slope has had the ulcerated portions scraped clean at the top and bottom and might hopefully be properly done sometime soon.

    Findlay Gardens access resurfaced...

Top still fenced-off and footway still requiring repair.

Restalrig Road stairs unrepaired but bit at the bottom holding up so far:

    Pooslope still pooslopey:

Someone must have reported the sofa underneath the Restalrig Road bridge. Some councilmen were wandering around under the Lochend Road bridge looking for it and wondering how to get a vehicle onto the path. I think they could drive on at Findlay Gardens but it wouldn't be too heavy to lug it up the foot-slope if they watch their feet.

...there are signs up advising that the road beneath the bridge will be closed tomorrow night whilst the bridge is removed.

I didn't realise they're removing the whole bridge, I thought it was just being re-engineered to remove the steps. Seems a bit extreme to lose a few steps, but beggars, choosers etc.!

I do recall reading how the recently community-forested slope was going to be de-community-forested, but they're getting some new land to re-community-forest in recompense I think.

Another small but tiny step in linking up this part of the city off the road network.

P.S. something on your back I think

From the drawings of the improved layout it certainly looked like the bridge would be the same width and in the same place, but a report from one if the residents of the adjoining buildings stated that the little notification-letter they'd received notified them of the temporary closure of the road to take down the bridge, which also reportedly currently has a hole in it. I'll check it out on my way in today.
