"the average employee spends £3782 a year on petrol and parking while commuting to work, rising to £4853 in Edinburgh."

CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 15years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.
RULES No personal insults. No swearing.

I wonder what that average drops to if they count all the employees who don't drive to work? (I'm assuming that this is all they counted - it would be interesting to have a breakdown like that, and then those that drive can see just how much they are spending compared to other methods, rather than just a bald 'that's high!' figure).
Of course by "commuters" they mean "people who choose to drive to work".
Driving to work does not represent all commuters...
Buses are a lot cheaper than (say) Aberdeen ...
Terrible research (or reporting) - do Edinburgh commuters drive further, is petrol more expensive, is parking more expensive? It doesn't explain why Edinburgh is more expensive than elsewhere - if that really is the case.
I can't even find this "Virgin Business Media" company, never mind the source study results.
And despite my fondness for gadgets, I doubt the total cost of ownership for my bicycle and associated bits will come close to the £4500pa quoted. Maybe £3000 over 5 years and even that is pushing it.
I think CCE should put out a press release saying that Edunburgh is the best place for cycle commuting due to a mixture of paths, bike shops and supportive web sites...
I'm sure it would get printed by various papers, and maybe Anth and Dave could be interviewed for telly - again.
Why do I get the feeling that some of those commuters live in London but work in Edinburgh...

At my work, some do! Although it's a weekly rather than daily round trip...
